Judge Brown of Madison county ruled the sales tax law unconstitutional after a hearing. He cited constitutional limits on reallocating funds, public policy against preemptive relief, uneven county effects, and concerns over small sales penalties and fraud incentives. State authorities will push the case to the Supreme Court with a May 15 decision target.
Pleasant Grove church hosts an Easter supper on April 12 with a general meal and homemade ice cream priced 35c and 20c. An after supper entertainment with a three act play and music follows, and admission is free. All are invited to attend.
Messrs Tenhouse and Putz report a successful community sale at the Tenhouse barn held Tuesday of last week despite low mood times. Prices paid were better than anticipated with buyers from Missouri and as far east as the Illinois River. A Missouri stock raiser brought several Jersey cows to the sale. weather was cloudy with occasional rain. Managers expect a fall resumption and praise communal cooperation and support.
An editorial argues school music programs via active P T A groups and local musicians foster musical education, aid attendance, and strengthen civic organizations, comparing impact to minor leagues feeding major leagues. It suggests Liberty school could benefit when times improve.
In a Tuesday election of 300 votes the Democratic ticket won all races while the poll tax was repealed by 230 to 49. Officials chosen include Town Clerk Albert Flick 151 votes to A F Husemann 141, Assessor J K Akers 181 to George Vollmer 109, Justice of the Peace Floyd Horner 149 Roy Winger 184, Enoch Swisher 127, Constable Earl Sumter 182, School Trustee E B Grubb 192 Ralph Hofmeister 84, Park Commissioner G D Carl 191. Freidracht chosen moderator. Tax levies set for year include town fund 800, roads and bridges 250, relief 50, gravel fund 600.
Robert Noftz Jr and Maurice Robinson joined a Burton Community Club event at the Newtown Baptist Church. Liberty business men funded the evening with a warm reception, while Quitcy high school band Hamm's Bandy performed and F Russell advised on farming. The highlight was the ambitious local play The Allocation of Helen.
Mrs Dean Barnest hosted a shower for her sister in law Mrs Floyd Henderson and honored her parents Mr and Mrs Andy Henderson in Galesburg Tuesday evening. Bunco was played at two tables with prizes to Mrs Vera Hull and Mrs Nina Baird. A two course luncheon followed.
Twenty five boys practiced at Diehl Park as spectators watched. Fourteen players were chosen for the Liberty team and two independent games will follow to pick the lineup for the 1983 league season. Next Sunday Liberty will play Ellington at Diehl Park with 2 30 start time. Come out and boost your home team.
