Fire at the Hix building basement level destroyed Sheets restaurant inventory and surplus stock. Hix Bros stock damaged mainly by water. second floor housing Drs Snyder and Kingery and Mrs Stonestreet dressmaking parlors also ruined. Insured losses likely not fully covering damage.
William Hoge, son of Col and Mrs W M Hoge, a West Point graduate from the Class of 1916, left Wednesday to join his regiment at Brownsville Texas. He already holds the rank of First Lieutenant and chose field artillery after the expansion of the army created numerous vacancies.
Earl Hancock, a colored boy who was arrested and paroled last Monday for a previous break in at the Mercantile Company store, was arrested again Tuesday for breaking into Seiter's store Sunday afternoon. He secured about $10 in change from Mr. Seiter and is now in jail.
Louis James, a yard clerk at Myrick for three years, has been transferred to Jefferson City and will be promoted to assistant yardmaster.
Dr John Aull son of Mr and Mrs William Aull Sr declares exclusive focus on pediatric disease care with offices in the Rialto Building Kansas City Missouri. Aull trained at University of Virginia Johns Hopkins and Barnes Hospital St Louis and will be associated with Dr Frank G Neff.
Richard M. Vaughan of Oakland California visits his parents Mr and Mrs George M Vaughan in this city. Vaughan is assistant engineer of the Gas and Electrical Department of the Railroad Commission of California. This is his first visit home since he left nine years ago.
Mr and Mrs A J Nolting Mrs Jacob Fegert Misses Mary Winkler Louise and Elizabeth Gruber and Freda Luehrman attended a Mission meeting of the German Evangelical Church in Wellington on Sunday.
Mrs L Fred Evans and her two children arrived back in Independence Friday morning following a visit in this area with her parents Judge and Mrs Richard Field.
County court met with Presiding Judge W Wright and associates D G Wade and Julius Vogt plus County Clerk G W Bates and Sheriff W H Waddell. Requisitions from special road districts were honored for Wellington and Napoleon 593.04, Corder and Alma 447.69, Higginsville 814.60, Concordia 260.00. A state appropriation of 15 166.39 for Lafayette county school money was ordered. Washington Township road funding may be raised locally up to 100.00. Wolf scalp awarded 3.00 and 1.50 for pup scalp post September 12 1916. McGrew Coal Co. bid 1 14¢ per bushel for coal contract. Mike Rosetti to be sent to Colony for Feeble Minded at Marshall. if not admitted, to State Hospital at St. Joseph.
In an adjourned session the criminal court disposed cases as Oscar Green pled guilty to grand larceny and was sentenced to two years with parole. Jake Hayden had parole revoked after a prior two year sentence for forgery. Earl Hancock pleaded guilty to grand larceny and was sent to the Boonville Industrial School with parole. Lee Gully’s case ended with a five year penitentiary sentence after overruled motion. George Irvine Williams’ case was dismissed. Ernest Huff’s parole was revoked from a two year sentence. Court adjourned to October 30, 1916.

Mrs. H Ardinger and her young son John Franklin left Friday to visit relatives in Louisiana. Miss Edna J Haley of Louisiana, who had been staying with the Ardingers, accompanied them on the trip.
In a local contest for Leading Lady of A Lexington Romance the moving picture shoot today saw Grace Jameison take first place by a tight margin. Carie Smith, a high school graduate and El more Smith’s daughter, finished second with Genevieve Blee third. Jameison chose Irvin Morris, a rising Lafayette County attorney, as her leading man. Misses Graham and Harding placed fourth and fifth with promising cast roles. About sixty young people join the production. Jamison’s victory drew long-running campaign support from family and friends, while Smith’s late arrival in Harrisonville kept her candidacy a surprise.
Sunday noon Ernest Roy the fire chief was riding his motorcycle home for dinner when he collided with an automobile at Thirteenth and Franklin. He suffered a badly shattered ankle. the driver helped him to his car and took him home. Dr Chalkley treated him. Roy appeared to be at fault for riding on the wrong side of the street.
Ben Nave was slugged and robbed of a sack of groceries Saturday night around 10. He regained consciousness and walked to the water plant, where he reported the crime to police. The highwayman remains at large.
George Stritzer and Pat Gowen each paid $5.50 in police court Monday for a can of suds. They were arrested Saturday. Gowen got until October 1 to pay the fine, while Stritzer was ordered to board with Mr. Mavel.
Rev. R. N. Allen and Dr. Z. M. Williams traveled to Kansas City Tuesday night to join the annual session of the Southwest Missouri Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. The gathering convened Wednesday morning at Central Methodist Church.
In yesterday's police court Robert Fauss was found guilty of disturbing the peace and received a three months stay of execution. Lizzie Brown was fined 5.75 dollars for drunkenness.
Sixteen couples of the Pinochle Club enjoyed an informal hop Wednesday night from 8 30 to 11 30 at the Eagles Hall. Smiths orchestra furnished the music and a most enjoyable time was realized by all present.
Miss Elizabeth Cruse returns Sunday morning to her home in New Franklin Missouri after visiting here with Miss Ester Wiley and other friends.
Sam Perry and family spent Sunday with Mr and Mrs John Perry near Lexington. Fred Smith and wife returned from six weeks in Indiana and St Louis. Various residents traveled to Kansas City Waverly and Marshall for visits, conventions, and medical or personal matters. Community members attended the W C T U convention in Waverly and other short trips to Buckner, Boonville, and Mayview.
Mrs Hattie Eldin of Sixth street slipped and fell Thursday around nine. She sustained bruises to the head and body. condition not serious but injuries are painful.
George Zeysing and H T Redd conducted business in Lexington Tuesday. Mrs Laura Mitchel of Boonville visited her niece Mrs W C Pauling. Bonnie and Goldie Cox left for Warrensburg to attend school. Prof Carl Harwood left for St Worth Texas to start teaching. Francis Vandiver, Garr school teacher, spent weekend with home folks. Mrs Mary Barley and Mrs Martha Hawks of Buckner guests here this week. Jeffy Wilson and son Chalmers visited Annie Eagan. James Cather left for Louisiana for daughter Mrs Ernest Cather’s illness. Mrs Martin Pauling returned from Denver. Andy Cretzmeyer family visited near Aullville. H T Winn family returned to Kansas City after two weeks here. Emanuel and Green of Odessa here Sunday. Jennie B Carter returned to Lexington after visit with Dr W G Harwood. Entertainment at Christian church Friday night September 15 by Rev H B Smith Marshall. Garner Groves, Lloyd Weedin, Menefee Redd, Eugene Bagan attend Lexington school and spent weekend with relatives. Dr and Mrs H Kennedy of St Louis visited S E Vaughan. Harmon Wahl Jr received a new Maxwell. Tommie Bertrand, Ligon Vaughan and Tom Holman left for Atchison Kansas for positions.
Public sale for Capt. Ryland Todhunter to be held at his Lexington home in Greystone Park on September 22 featuring fine horses including harness and saddle mounts. The sale was postponed from September 7 due to rain.
Woodson Barnett spent yesterday in Higginsville. Mr and Mrs M D Wilson traveled to Kansas City for a short visit. Ellea Wood and Miss Mary Hays also visited towns nearby. Mrs John Morrison and her son Guy visited Kansas City, while Arthur Johns visited Blackburn. Mr and Mrs H Reinhart returned to Columbia after a visit with Mr and Mrs J F Winn.
