J T Rosa Jr of the University of Missouri College of Agriculture advises starting the garden in fall after frost. Pull and burn dead vines from crops like tomatoes squash and melons to curb pests and diseases. Remove root crops for storage, broadcast rotten manure and bone meal or acid phosphate, then plow. Fall plowing improves soil, dries faster, and speeds spring planting.
