Jubilant Lexington wakes at 3 am as armistice news spreads. Wentworth cadets lead spontaneous citywide parade with bands and flags. Stores stay open, a holiday mood prevails and mass celebration continues while crowds fill the streets. World wars rarely end, so the city seizes the moment.
Mrs Sarah Perry reports her son Richard Perry missing since September 18. He was sent to Camp Funston with a contingent on September 18. Local authorities seek information to locate him.
Quarantine against the Flu partially lifted with shops resuming normal hours. The opera house opened Tuesday night and nearly all businesses returned to usual operations.
Miss Florence Dierking traveled to Kansas City Sunday morning to enter Research Hospital Training School for Nurses. She intends to begin training as a nurse, joining the program and pursuing nursing education at the facility.
Telegram confirms death of Mrs. E. V. Cook at 5:20 p.m. yesterday in Twin Falls Idaho. Eldest daughter of J. W. Shouse, born May 14 1883 in Johnson County, married June 1913 to Mr. Cook. Survived by husband, daughter Mary Virginia, three brothers Ewing in Navy, Eugene in France, William Shouse, two sisters Mrs. Weber of this city and Mrs. Mansfield of Washington. Shouse left for Twin Falls after telegram of illness.
Wentworth Military Academy defeated Lawrence High School 54 to 0 in a game lacking notable features. Hollis the Wentworth halfback stood out with steady gains and a 10 yard touchdown run. Lawrence showed spirit but was outclassed. Wentworth extends to six straight victories.
The Intelligencer will publish the United War Work Campaign Fund subscriber list if the Chairman releases it. It will be printed in every Lexington home to show who is bearing the burden in war work activities.
The counties of the Seventh district gave Democrat Sam C Major a majority of 78 over Republican J D Salts of Bois D Arc. A note of congratulations to the Seventh district.
In a public note published in The Lexington Intelligencer, S. P. Phillips thanks his Democrat and Republican friends for their support in the November 1918 general election. He says he is not disheartened by defeat, accepting the outcome as a standard contingency for candidates and expresses gratitude for goodwill and expressions of support.
Local draft board receives orders from Provost Marshall General Crowder to cancel all draft calls from this county while continuing classification of questionnaires and physical examinations for the September LOI registrants.
Independence High School defeated Wentworth Scrubs 57 to 13 on Wednesday. Independence led 37 points at halftime, while Wentworth totaled 18 in the second half as Independence outpaced them throughout the game.
Lieut A D Mudd of United War Workers will speak at the Lexington courthouse Saturday at 7 30 p m. The public is cordially invited to attend this address.
While the opera house was closed for the flu quarantine, Mr Young had the interior thoroughly cleaned and repainted. He also installed a Bradbury Concert Grand piano.
Mr. and Mrs. T. M. Hoffman were visitors in Wellington on Sunday, enjoying local sights and social activity. They stayed for the day and returned home in the evening.
Carvey N. Dougerty of Waverly, member of Company A, 140th Infantry, reported killed in action. Dougherty, previously employed nearby, enlisted after serving at a local banquet in this city.
Thomas Walton received a letter Wednesday from grandson Thomas Walton Jr a member of Company A 140th Infantry in France stating he is in a hospital recovering from spinal meningitis Private Victor M Bour who had been at Camp Lee Va with the coast artillery returned home yesterday morning having received an honorable discharge due to physical disability
Mrs L A Goladay has received word that her son Sergt Roscoe Golladay is ill in a base hospital in France.
Christmas parcels will be received at the Red Cross Rooms for inspection wrapping and posting from 2 to 6 each afternoon beginning Wednesday November 13 through November 20 for inspection and posting. Mrs John N Sturgis is chairman.
Baxter Waters, Pastor, announces a ban lift and resumption of church services. Bible school at 9:45, preaching at 10:50 and 7:20. Invites members to gather for hymns of praise and thanksgiving.
Frank Shroyer died at his North Seventeenth home Friday night at 8:46 after a two week bout with typhoid fever. Born October 13, 1875 near Waverly Missouri, he moved to Lexington sixteen years ago and married Bessie Owen on December 22, 1901. Survived by four children, brothers L. W. Shroyer of Hodge J. E. Shroyer of Kansas City, sisters Mrs. W. E. Edwards of Hodge, Mrs. Robert Watts of Marshall, Mrs. Elizabeth Thomas and Mrs. M. Minger of Waverly. Funeral by Rev. J. E. B. Alexander held Monday at 3 PM.
Henry Free attempted a break in at Mrs. Sarah Terrill’s home on 20th street. Vernon Terrill, 16, fired a 22 rifle through the door wounding Free in the stomach. Free was taken to Lexington hospital for treatment. no arrests were made.
A letter thanks the Democratic party and many Republicans for support in the county clerk race at the General Election. Bates vows to continue duty as a public servant, recalling a public officer serves the people.
Sunday morning and evening services led by Rev. L Be Arvin of Vandalia Missouri. Full attendance requested. Sheriff and Mrs Joe Talbott traveled to Kansas City Wednesday for the day. Miss Honor Goodloe returned Wednesday evening from a visit in Kansas City.
American’s richest man donates 85 million through the Rockfeller foundation to the United War Work Campaign fund, part of a 250 million total. Earlier gifts included 5 million from United States Steel and 355 thousand from Standard Ship Building employees. Western Union contributed nothing on the day.
The Concordia Branch of the American Red Cross has elected officers for the ensuing year. Chairman is Prof. J. T. C. Kaeppel. Vice Chairman is Mrs. S. A. Duensing. Secretary is Rev. Meyer. Treasurer is Theo L. Bartman. New executive board members include Mrs. E. A. Duensing Miss Ella Kroenecke Miss Carrie Kroencke Prof. J. H. C. Kaeppel Prof. Ad Haentschel Rev. Z. F. Meyer and Alfred Kroenecke.
G W Hackley expresses gratitude to his many friends who stood by him during the November election. He says he is proud of his home vote, notes Republicans and Democrats supported him, and declares he harbors no ill will.
Mr and Mrs Ed St Clair of Himtsvil Missouri have been visiting Mr and Mrs HH K St Clair in this city. They left Wednesday to visit Kansas City before returning home.
