Sunday afternoon around 5:30 near Levasy a pleasure trip turned over killing Owen Gaffin. Mrs. Bour and Swen Gaffin Sr. were injured with skull fracture and facial wounds. Gaffin’s daughter Mrs Arthur Bour survived. funeral arrangements noted with sympathy from neighbors.
The French Comfort Pack ets Committee thanks contributors to the Christmas bag fund. They shipped 63 bags and 34 packets to the New York headquarters, valued at 2 to 3 dollars each, to be sent to France for soldiers at the trenches. A unit for the United States and the Allies will be formed in Lexington.
Pierre Mavel, Lexington boy and crew member of the U S S Montana at Portsmouth Navy Yard, was seriously injured Monday night October 29 in an automobile accident. His skull fractured and another party member was killed. An operation was reported successful. Monroe Butler, also from Lexington and in the same crew, is convalescing from pneumonia.
Yesterday about 10.30 the residence of the TH Noyes at the corner of 20th and Franklin streets was damaged considerably by fire and smoke. The fire originated in the basement and produced dense smoke that caused most of the damage. The fire company soon had it subdued.
Mr and Mrs J J Davis departed Saturday for their Olatha Kansas home following a visit with Clark Davis. William Loomis headed Wednesday to Camp Funston to join Company A 21st Field Artillery. Mr Loomis had volunteered in June.
Upton Wilson longtime resident with ties to Kentucky Missouri and Oklahoma died November 3, 1917 at his daughter Mrs Lee Hawkins home in Mangum Oklahoma. Born April 15 1828 in Louisville Kentucky he studied at Hanover College married Catherine D Neill in 1855 and had three sons I Fry Wilson Stephen N and Mathew D Wilson. Funeral held November 7 at 10 30 a m at his son S N Wilson’s home conducted by Rev Xenophon Ryland and Rev Robt L Cowan.
John Aull died Sunday around 1 PM at his home after several weeks of illness. A stroke a week earlier led to his death. Born in Lexington on July 9, 1856, he spent his life farming and raising livestock and earned wide esteem. He is survived by four brothers, three sisters, and a sister in Mercedes, Texas. The funeral service, conducted by Rev. R. L. Cowan, was held at his home Tuesday at 3 PM.
James Woodson Slasher, thirteen months old, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Slasher of 1906 Franklin Avenue, died yesterday morning after a week with pneumonia. Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family.
The three weeks old infant, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Barnes, died Tuesday morning at 5 o clock at the family home on 23rd Street. The death note appears in local notices and cites the time and residence, with no further cause or services listed.
The second Liberty loan total subscribes to 4,617,532,300 dollars with 9,400 buyers listed. An ad urges Cole's Hot Blast Heaters to avoid chilly mornings. The D A R Halloween party at Elks Hall raised 35 dollars for the Missouri Red Cross Ambulance fund.
Seventeen hundred sixty three residents signed the Food Conservation pledge in six days. Men 367, Women 870, Students 586. cards should be displayed in windows to aid recanvassing. Enrollment is about one third of the population. campaign extended to Saturday November 13, 1917. committee hopes to enlist all citizens soon.
John K Taubman of Catron Taubman Abstract and Agency Co reports sales for Joseph A McFahin et al of the north 62 acres on Dover Road one mile east of Lexington to Geo Mudd for 6000 dollars and the south 75 acres to Joseph B Williams for 15750 dollars. Taubman also sold Carl Taegtbuehring property on Franklin Street to Chas W Rohr for 3500 dollars and the north 27 acres of Ella Goodson and Mary Goodson farm 314 miles southeast of Lexington to Mrs Virgie Willard for 5500 dollars.
A Fort Douglas Utah message announces Capt Palmer promoted to Major effective November first from August. It also notes a new baby girl in the Palmer home. Major Palmer is ordered to Des Moines Iowa and will depart Fort Douglas Friday for his new station.
Wingate Moorehead son of Mr and Mrs James R Moorehead of Kansas City has volunteered for service in the United States Radio Service and is at the Great Lakes training station. After preliminary training he will go to Harvard University for finishing touches.
Mrs. Leroy Farmer received word from her sister Mrs T H Kauffman of Alton Illinois that her home was totally destroyed by fire early Tuesday morning. Mrs Gertrude P Brelsford and her two daughters Mrs H L Boyer and Miss Garnette Brelsford of Kansas City spent Tuesday with friends in Lexington their former home. Mrs Laura L Hill who has been visiting Rev Baxter Waters left Wednesday for Leavenworth Kansas being called there by the illness of a relative.
Break in Tuesday night netted about $2 in change and an iron box with papers taken from the safe. The box was broken open behind Haerle's warehouse on Franklin Avenue. Papers found scattered on the street. A fight erupted in Shack 42 Mg area between Scott and William Brown. Brown killed after a day of feuds and gunfire. Scott fled to George Hulver’s nearby farm. Brown died Wednesday at St Margaret's hospital in Kansas City Kansas.
Mr Joseph A Fleming and Miss Mary Rebecca Danner wed Thursday afternoon at 2 at the Presbyterian parsonage Rev R L Cowan officiating In Wellington. Mr David W Danner and Miss Lillian McCowan attended.
Mr Z D Barker and Miss Lillian Gallaway of Odessa wed at noon in the office of Justice of the Peace Clyde Wright who performed the ceremony.
Mr Curtis Kinchloe and Miss Pearl Rider both of Mayview were married Saturday afternoon in the Recorder's office with Judge S N Wilson officiating.
Clyde Wright has accepted a local agency of the National Surety Company of New York with authority to write single bonds up to 809000 dollars under U S Government ratings, the largest amount a single company can execute in the United States.
Mrs. Lloyd Mitchell traveled to Kansas City yesterday to visit her husband in St Margarets hospital. Mrs. H. K. St. Clair and her sister Miss Susie Alford went Saturday to visit their mother Mrs Florence Alford. Mrs. Olive Hogsett returned Wednesday to Kansas City after visiting the Morath sisters, and Miss Emma Morath accompanied her home for a visit.
The county court appointed Thomas A. Walker as justice of the peace in Lexington township to fill the expired term of John Hedge. The Wednesday session confirmed Walker’s role in the local judiciary.
Mrs and Mrs George Cath returned to Harrisonville after attending the funeral of Ove Gabin. Everett Mitchell left for his company in San Antonio Texas following the death of his mother. Mrs B S Cromwell returned to Kansas City after visiting the Drysdales and Misses Drysdale.
