State Board Increases Valuation to Offset Prohibition Loss

The State Board of Equalization fixed the state’s 1919 assessed valuation at 2,271,205,994, about 20 percent higher than 1918 to counter anticipated revenue losses from federal prohibition. Governor Gardner and others attended. Auditor Hackmann was absent. The board reduced the old Tax Commission valuation of 4,134,523,194, and Chairman Roy D. Williams plans public group meetings to guide fair assessments and reduce inequalities. The Missouri Women’s Suffrage Association will meet July 1 to discuss the federal suffrage movement.
