Chinese Geography Ideas From a Humbling Village Exchange
A traveling American observed local Chinese officials debating geography in an amusing exchange. The officials mistook distances and hemispheres, revealing gaps in Western maps versus Chinese learning. Despite their ignorance of modern geography they were highly educated, having studied ancient texts up to early modern times.

Mauve Color Celebration in London Marks Perkin Discovery
In London March marks the mauve jubilee tied to W. H. Perkin who, as a Royal College of Chemistry assistant, spotted the purple shade that became mauve while experimenting with quinine. He later patented the process and helped establish dye works near Harrow with his father. A memorial fund and portraits were proposed at a gathering of friends to honor his contribution to chemistry.
