Drought and heat cripple rail stocks and farm markets as corn and broom crops fail across Kansas, Missouri, and North Texas. Potatoes jump in price while hay and livestock suffer. water scarcity worsens conditions ten miles from towns.
A cloudburst in early July unleashed a six foot high water surge six hundred feet wide that destroyed tracks and bridges along the Great Northern line near Wickes and Corbin Montana. Debris blankets gulch. a dam formed by a railway fill backed water for a quarter mile before failing. A home in Twin Gulch crushed by a landslide spared its occupants. Mrs. Turner and six children survived.
Will Tomeh Town Line, Columbia, Mo., July 11. The directors of the Columbia Honteville Northwestern railway company decide to build the proposed road northward from Trenton in Grundy county to the town line. The northern terminus will be Gainesville, Mo., near the line.
The twentieth International convention of the United Society of Christian Endeavorers closed yesterday in Cincinnati. Attendance did not meet expectations though the event was described as a brilliant success from start to finish.
Report from Helens Montana states seven guards surround the Great Northern robbers on Peeples Creek south of the Little Rockies. Sheriff Grifith heads from Malta with a posse of 40 men awaiting arrival to seize the suspects.
Buffalo July 11 Commercial Travelers day at Pan-American exposition featured a morning parade despite threatening skies. Several thousand men marched with numerous bands, creating a lively scene amid unsettled weather.
Topeka Kansas July 11 Secretary Coburn state board of agriculture says many Kansas county fairs will be abandoned due to drought. Topeka state fair managers have also abandoned the enterprise. In Carthage Missouri an 11 year old girl is jailed charged with stealing diamonds worth $1,000 from a jewelry store.
Washington July 11 receipts from Internal revenue in the first ten days of July totaled 11 862 008. Officials said the figure surprised them and suggests all prior estimates of war revenue reductions must be revised. Machine and Wheat Destroyed Larned Kan July 11 a thrashing machine six miles NW of town caught fire from a hot box and was destroyed. The blaze spread to two nearby farms burning 13 large stacks of wheat.
A catastrophic wreck between Marshall and Slater Missouri on the Chicago and Alton line at 7 a m killed sixteen and injured about fifty. Trains involved were westbound No 7 from Chicago and No 88's first section from Kansas City. A fire followed, destroying several cars while some Pullmans survived. Many listed dead and injured include railroad workers and passengers from multiple states. A hospital train carried the injured to Kansas City. four trainmen died at Slater. The accident prompted widespread horror and extensive reporting across the region.
Mr Frank Tutt traveled from Kansas City to purchase a saddle horse in Lafayette County Missouri. He bought Deputy Sheriff Charles Kipkeads brown saddle mare for Miss Helena Gould of Irvington New York at 180. The mare was shipped that night to Irvington where she will carry Miss Gould safely showing Missouri stock. York Pa July 11 Judge Stewart held George W Teat and John T Frey in contempt for violating the injunction against ipicketing and interference with York Manufacturing. The strike leaders were fined 250 and costs and sentenced to imprisonment for days.
