Important business change in Lexington on 1914
The Wilson-Fredendall Dry Goods Co. will become Lexington Mercantile Co. on January 1, 1914, with John K. Tankman as manager and Joseph A. Scarlett as assistant manager. The store, the county’s largest dry goods house, traces its history through multiple name changes and locations, with Neal and Wilson departing and the new team taking over, maintaining most staff. The Intelligencer notes Mr. Wilson and Mr. Neal will move on, while Mr. Taubman and Mr. Scarlett bring strong reputations, and inventory will start January 1 with the store reopening soon after. The piece ends with a death notice for Buford A. Chinn, longtime Lexington shoe dealer, traveler, and family man, whose funeral is planned.
