Indian War At Big Hole Described In Mont Aug 9
The letter recounts Gen Gibbon with six companies of the 9th Infantry surprising the Indians at the Big Hole at 4 pm on Aug 9. About 75 to 100 Indians were killed or wounded, a howitzer captured, and 2,000 rounds of ammunition found. Marching to Howard the Indian hostiles near Henrys Lake
Salt Lake Utah Aug 25 The statement of Capt Bainbridge commanding Fort Hall describes leaving 2 PM on the 19th with an escort of 10 soldiers and 50 Bannack and Shoshone scouts to join Gen Howards command. They reached Howard at 1 AM on the 22nd after 150 miles. Howard is on the hostiles trail a days march behind Henrys Lake. The hostiles number at most 200 fitters. Freighters along the Montana stage road were unsettled but no freight was disturbed. Howard values the scouts and expects assistance. The Washington special says a general Indian conspiracy is unlikely and no relief for Howard is planned.
