From Lewiston to the sea, the Riparia Cut-off will be built as the biggest infrastructure gain the city has ever received. Officials claim it will streamline transport, boost commerce, and connect Lewiston more directly with coastal markets. Detailed timelines and funding sources are to be announced by city authorities.
Portland dispatch reports at the Arlington club banquet E H Harriman announced joint construction of the Lewiston Riparia railroad by the Oregon Railroad and Navigation Company and the Northern Pacific. Mellen of NP favored a rail route to Astoria, stressing faster direct service and regional development.
The Lewiston Riparia line is described as joint property with the Missoula cut off extending 300 miles to the sea. R H Libby purchased a 160 acre tract owned by Joseph Alexander on the Washington side of the river north of the ferry. The property will be platted and has water on a bandcare, listed at $16 000. Portland syndicate sold Idaho banking and investment parcels south of Lewiston totaling 10 000.
