June 16 reports state Jo seph’s band Salmon River Indians gathered at Camas Prairie and attacked settlers. Five men killed one mortally wounded one child and a wagon owner wounded while others fled. News of further killings near Salmon River spurred calls for troops. A letter from Keq K P Brown urged rescue as Camas Prairie fell under tribal control aside from Mt Idaho. Lewiston ordered cavalry proceeds and guarded towns while settlers rushed to safety.
June 17 report details conflicting rumors on Indian movements from Lapwai garrison led by Col. Perry toward Mt Idaho. Dispatches claim some tribes attacked settlers on Salmon River, others fortified on Cotton Wood Creek. Casualty notes include Baker, Benedict, Mason, Elfres, and Warren family deaths. two white men Davenport and Ousley killed. a pack train seized. pursuit by troops in progress. Reports from Kamia and Mt Idaho corroborate some killings. civilians observe scattered Indians. Lewiston prepares home defense with 60 men. steamer Infantry expected tonight and cavalry tomorrow. about 500 Indians reportedly on Hangman Creek with no hostilities yet.
Dispatches from Mount Idaho dated June 16 1877 report Colonel Perry and volunteers clashing with Nez Perce forces at White Bird Canyon. Heavy casualties and a retreat by cavalry followed, with reports of houses burned on the prairie and a need for surgeons and artillery. Conflicting tallies place killed and missing ranging up to about sixty, while other letters note continued movements and reinforcements toward Lapwai and the garrison.
Joseph Fisco files a complaint against Joan Hardin over abandoning Homestead Entry No 42 dated July 13 1873 in New Perce County S T. The parties must appear at the office on July 1877 at 11 a m to respond and provide testimony. Register J M Howe and Receiver R J Monroe oversee the matter.
