Forged Resignation Letter Spurs Judge Lewis Reappointment

Washington May 23 An obviously forged letter purporting to be from J R Lewin Chief Justice of Washington Territory resigning and praising reconciliation policy prompted the President to name Associate Justice Green to fill the vacancy. Telegraphic confirmation later showed the letter a fake, and Lewis remained in office. The incident echoes a similar fraud six years earlier when a forged resignation of Idaho Chief Justice led to an attempted appointment but was thwarted.
