The opening of the spring term Monday brings a light schedule while jury cases are slated for next week. In a criminal docket priority, Kelly pleads guilty and receives a one year sentence.
The spring district court session began with a light docket and juries not yet called. Main actions include the Caldwell larceny case featuring Kit Chitwood as a new witness, Noyes and Caldwell burglary fights, and a guilty plea by Michael Kelly for assault with a deadly weapon. A divorce case Day vs Day and citizenship grants for Rost and Prizybliski were also noted, with city council set to discuss a new water system.
In district court Ramey and Ramsey clash over a homestead tied to John Magnussen, mising farmer Ove Magnussen, with Ramsey appointed guardian. Ramey seeks review of that guardianship, contending the land claimant is not the same Magnussen. Judge Steele sustained the demurrer with deadlines set for filings. Ramsey's attorney is C. L. McDonald.
Wilson Bowlby tells a TELLER reporter that Nezperce building continues, with large brick structures planned this summer. A stock company of Woodmen of the World will erect a 60 by 110 foot ground space building housing hardware and furniture, backed by $4000 from Mr Mockler. Lewiston also grows as F W Kettenbach fixes a new two story business block with stone front for Kettenbach Grain and Insurance offices, plus upper floor offices.
Prisoner made a dash for freedom but was headed off by Officer Lindsay who chased the fugitive through several blocks and captured him near the county jail.
A prisoner J W Crow attempted to flee from the county jail yesterday afternoon pursued by jailor Thos Lindsay who fired as Crow rode away on a horse. Crow was captured near Monroe street after a shot was fired and it appeared confederates aided the escape. Crow faces jail break charges with additional punishment expected. Also celebrating Washington's Birthday, Culdesac Knights of Pythias established Confidence lodge No 36 with a special train and prominent locals guiding the effort.
Archie McLeod of Culdesac was bound over on liquor dealing charges after a Friday hearing before U. S. Commissioner RE O Neill. The case, set for the May term of the Federal court, included witnesses G A Roberts Culdesac postmaster and the defendant’s stepdaughters. McLeod then swore out a petition for a further proceeding.
A tense Lewiston council session touched on water questions likely to be resubmitted for conference. Charges and a broader compromise were discussed as Goan bondholders and the water company sought to avoid extended litigation. Separately U S Marshal arrested Darr and Harve Reynolds from a gang of revenue-law violators. Darr claimed ignorance of confederates arrest and sought a speedy trial. Ben Shultz and wife visited Nezperce residents earlier in the week.
