Important Timber and Stone Act Ruling Impacts Filings

The Lewiston land office reports a department ruling on the Armstrong case clarifying that filing an application to purchase under the timber and stone act without proof or payment does not prevent later filings. Lewiston Plans Civil Service Tests and Hotel Investment

Nine applicants appeared before Special Agent Clement last Saturday to take the civil service exam for Lewiston free delivery carrier and clerk positions. Papers were sent to Washington with expected start after June 1. Two carriers and a substitute plus one clerk will be needed. Carrier candidates include W. L Coleman Albert R Henderson Abraham R Endsly Geo P Sullivan Charles W Grumnstead Benj S Zirbell Orville Liversparger. Clerk candidates Adelaide M Freeman and Bdward C Downing. A modern hotel for Lewiston with 100 rooms is proposed costing 75 000 to 100 000, with a local investor offering to build or sponsor stock and lease terms. Plans mature with promising prospects.

Northern Pacific to start daily freight on Clearwater Line

Daily freight service will begin on the Clearwater Short Line and Lapwai branch on or after May 2 as traffic increases. Agent Jordan was notified this week. The railroad currently runs tri weekly trains from Lewiston on Mon Wed Fri and returns Tue Thu Sat. The new daily service aims to handle higher traffic.
