A fire at the Elmslie livery barn in Hettinger before midnight destroyed the barn and stock, including all twenty two horses. A sleeping sheep herder is missing likely deceased, smoke and heat prevented rescue. Blacksmith shop adjoining also burned. Losses threaten town as winds rose. insurance minimal.
Stowers Straybits reports Mason 8, Stowers returning June 4 from Whee N D with stock and machinery. Miss Evelyn Schneeberger of Fargo plans summer visit with her parents. Bentley S. S. science attendees included local ball team that played Bentley 29 to 15 in the afternoon. Mrs Morehenbacher visiting mother in Barnesville. Chas E Stowers visiting nearby. Miss Helen R Stowers, Post Master’s sister, visiting relatives. East visitors, including Mr Merry family, arrived for the July 4 Lemmon celebration. Reeves, Sanders, and Layland families hosted a July 4 picnic at Reeves's. Mrs A C Simmons and daughter Jennie of Fargo spend summer at H L Simmons's. E W Lathrop returned from Esmond with nephew Wesley Lathrop. Irvin Treat left for a short trip to Nebr. Spox remains active in the neighborhood. Weisbach children recently afflicted. Miss Lacey Heaton to Rochester Minn for old home visit after school closed. Stowers school closed June and Miss Beekant and Miss Monson closed July 6.
Hettinger fell 7 to 6 to Lemmon in a tense Sunday game marked by enthusiastic rooters from both towns. Homers were scarce with two by a Hettinger batter, and questions linger over the umpiring. Local notes also report many patent recordings and a Spring Butte coal mine now open for deliveries near Lemmon, 14 miles north.
Thom digs a well and begins a stone barn on his quarter’s southeast corner. John TD Potter pledges extra road days. Prairie township haying and crop reports note a poor year. A new neighbor, H E Kni fell from Mayville, N D, arrives and builds a shanty on his claim. South Dakota lifts smallpox quarantine rules effective May 7. cerebral meningitis also quarantined. Grand River C H Merry opens Spring Butte Coal Mine offering coal in any quantity. best quality yet.
