In 1747 German chemist Margraff found sugar in beets and the hunt for profit began. Achard built the first beet sugar factory in Cunern in 178 and later others in Germany and France. By 1883 the Sugar Trust cut prices as Dyers expanded plants including Alvarado and Eddy New Mexico. Beet culture requires deep moist soil, careful ploughing, row planting, thinning and hoeing through July to harvest.
