Was Schley's Victory on the Caribbean Waters
An eye witness reporter describes Commodore Schley's command during the Battle of Santiago de Cuba on July 4. The Brooklyn Oregon and Texas engaged the Spanish fleet outside the harbor as Infanta Maria Teresa Cristobal Colon and Vizcaya were driven ashore or sunk. Surrender came to Schley after Captain Cook accepted prisoners on the Brooklyn and New York ordered the exchange. Brooklyn suffered 26 hits with one death and one wound.
