Geo. Austin reports a strong beet season with 7000 acres planted and over 12 tons per acre yield in the Bear River Valley. Expansion expected to 10000 acres and over 100000 tons next year, aided by Utah Sugar Company farms and a growing seed program. The valley is poised to host a major, modern sugar operation if farmers sustain growth.
Sugar Campaign Results under Utah Sugar Company
Report by T E Cutler shows the Utah Sugar campaign closed on the 15th after a smooth run, cutting over 78 000 tons of beets and producing about 18 500 000 pounds of white sugar. The plant operated from September 24, 1901, at Provo Springville and Bingham Junction, averaging 1000 tons daily and packing about 2400 bags of sugar. The season yielded good sugar content and an average per acre of 12.4 tons, with some districts over 15 tons. Contractors including W J Jenkins, M N Woodhouse, Heber Austin, and others supplied beet roots, earning substantial payments. total contracted acres reached 1,560. The operation employed hundreds locally, with thousands connected during the beet season. The beet industry is viewed positively by farmers, who call it a mortgage lifter and anticipate higher next season.
