Local and Miscellaneous Notes and Updates

City Council meets tonight and transfers of real estate are frequent this past week. A post office opens at Big Springs with W. D. Johns as postmaster. The Pioneer urges subscriptions and notes Midland county events, snowdrift impacts, and a large Christmas expenditure. A new iron truss bridge at Waldron and a grand music box gift are mentioned amid local items.

Masquerade at Opera House Draws Large Attendance

The masquerade ball at the Opera House last Thursday drew about one hundred masked attendees in varied costumes from Italian tramp to eastern royalty. Prof Hart's band played well and organizers reported success with net proceeds near sixty five dollars. Christmas day passed quietly with a fruitful tree at the Christian church and a Presbyterian supper. A large street crowd enjoyed a festive day with little drunkenness and general goodwill.

Morton Monument to be unveiled in Indianapolis

The Morton Monument will be unveiled in Indianapolis on January 15 under the Grand Army of the Republic. An invitation extends to Rich Mountain Poet No. 42, and members travel at one cent per mile, with half fare for others. A vast crowd is anticipated at the State capital.

Cutting Affray at Ed Hyman's Saloon Ends in Severe Injuries

A feud between Joseph Griffin and Fletcher Troutman led to a stabbing at Ed Hyman's saloon Saturday night. Troutman struck with a knife, leaving Griffin badly injured with partial ear loss, a torn nose edge, scalp damage, and a side wound. Troutman fled, authorities say. At Christmas a party for William E. Roberts of Washington Township gave a large reception with many gifts and Dr. Utter in attendance. About fifty people celebrated Roberts' twenty seventh birthday with a dinner and presents.

Record of historic heavy snow paralyzing rail traffic

The heaviest snow in years struck Saturday night into Sunday, widespread across the northern states. Railroad travel slowed or halted as trains were hours late or canceled, with the Big Four Cincinnati train missing its 12:30 arrival until after midnight. The blockade persisted into Monday, then the thaw began as temperatures rose.

Hearing on W. B. Walls reinstatement before Judge Allison

A Friday verdict denied the application for reinstatement to practice at the Boone circuit bar. The court is said to limit further hearings, stating full justice has been afforded. Other items note a house fire near John Griffin, a toddler’s death in Harrison township, a two year old buried, and two siblings ill with disease. Dining at the Opera House for a masquerade was praised. The Auditor finished 1883 tax duplicates totaling 185357.83 with gravel road tax 29880.69. Lodge petitions for Ancient Order of United Workmen are under review, with installation planned. Snow Sunday reduced church attendance.

William Stafford's Shylock in The Merchant of Venice drew applause for a polished portrayal, strong makeup, and vivid expressions. Miss Evalyn Foster as Portia and a capable supporting cast enhanced a gorgeously staged production, with plans for another Harrisburg performance hinted.

Our Summer Boarders at the Academy of Music

The four act farcial comedy Our Summer Boarders by El liott Barnes drew packed audiences despite other attractions. Mandelon Zola impressed with a French and Spanish dance in act two and the finale featured specialty acts and Hebrew imitations by Frank Bush, who earned many encores.

Crawfordsville Grievances Over Punishment by City Educator
