Supreme Court Reverses County Liability Ruling

The Supreme Court reversed a lower court’s decision on whether the county is responsible for unpaid record work left undone by former Recorders. R. C. Garrett sought about 1200 for making a general index for the late W. F. Morgan. Rich Mountain Post 42 G A R elected officers including Jesse Neff as Post Commander and J. S. Harrison as Chaplain.

Old Soldier Receives Military Tactics Book

Last week Col. W. C. Kise received through the mail a book on military tactics carried through the Late War by his son Gen. Reuben C. Kise. The book had been in the possession of J. S. Edmunds of Ed wardsville Ill for years. He sent it to the Colonel after seeing his name in the Tribune. The Colonel prizes it highly.

Local school books reported missing as town notes trouble

A school library list shows titles such as Whittier's Poems and The Vicar of Wakefield removed last year. The notice asks for information, while town records list real estate transfers, tax notes, and a January court session.

County News Request Seeks Local Correspondents

Settlement Reports Tax Payments and Fines From Local Court

Treasurer John W. Hawkins settled with the state treasurer turning over 16483 00 including 46483 00 in taxes and school funds. Auditor Rice praised Auditor Ball for a flawless settlement sheet. In Pleasant View a fight led to fines for William Margusson Daniel Margusson and John Bennington. Sam Heath pleaded guilty to assault and Thos F Allen charged with provocation and concealed weapons. W L McCormick was fined 5 dollars and 43 dollars costs for an assault at School No 1.

Boots and Shoes Dealer B W Harden Fails and Assignment Made

The north side boot and shoe dealer B W Harden had his stock assigned on Monday to James Coombs for creditors. The papers give no liabilities or assets. Harden’s failure stems from a long unprofitable run and a harsh winter. His misfortune is mourned, but officials expect he will rebound. Also in circuit court Judge Allison reviews W B Walls bid for readmission to the Boone county bar this week. The opposition to Walls is less fierce than before.

Religious Readings and Church News This Week

Eld James Conner to preach at the Christian church next Saturday night and Sunday. The Methodist social was canceled due to a protracted meeting. Eld J F Beaman’s labors at the Baptist church last Sunday added two members. A young man’s conduct at the Baptist church was found obnoxious and will not be tolerated. Rev Lewis started a protracted meeting at the Methodist church Sunday. Revival spirit grows among members. Rev D B Banta reengaged for another year by the Presbyterian congregation. Presbyterian ladies plan a festival next Monday evening with supper for 1.00 including oysters. Christmas dinner set for Tuesday at 25 cents. Proceeds aid finishing the church. Christmas Tree at the Christian Church next Monday evening inviting all to bring presents.

Unclear Prison Papers Delays Hedges in Hurdle Suit

Fae Warden of the Northern Prison refuses to receive Al Hedges over irregular Benton county papers and holds him until corrected. The city hopes for a pardon as Hedges faces a three year sentence amid local discontent. A 70th birthday dinner for Mrs Eliza Gochenhour was held at Jacob Gochenhour's Perry town ship with about fifty guests. Judge James B Ryan is slated for transfer to the Insane Hospital due to financial ruin and excessive drinking. Mrs Auretta Hoyt dies in Indianapolis leaving temperance supporters in mourning.
