Fireman Kepner Averts Myerstown Flyer Wreck
A Philadelphia and Reading express near Linfield was saved from disaster when fireman Harry Kepner noticed a dry boiler and missing engineer. He braked the moving locomotive, sending the train to a stop just before a wreck. Engineer William Fieger of Pottsville was found unconscious, injured, and taken to Phoenixville Hospital. Passengers collected funds for Kepner’s quick action, and the Lebanon bound flyer ran two hours late arriving at Lebanon.

The nine month operation involved 87,000 temporary enumerators and 3,000 permanent workers.
