Dewey announces a campaign pledge to empower local offices and pursue a balanced foreign policy. He argues for wartime victory, warns against old leadership, and calls for full employment as a national priority while Taft commits to the platform and Willkie praises the opportunity.
Republican leaders lauded Gov. Thomas E. Dewey for his nomination acceptance address in Chicago. He vowed crushing defeat of the Axis powers and a return to prosperity after the war. He called for unity at home after victory abroad and an end to one man government.
Applications for marriage licenses were filed Tuesday by three couples. Warren C. Wolf, 16, a Hershey Chocolate factory worker of Lebanon Route 3, and Virginia L. Shifflet, 20, of Lebanon Route 3. Harvey K. Merkey, 31, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Merkey, of Myerstown Route 1, and Irene E. Light, 81, of Lebanon Route 3. Stanley W. Miller, 29, from Indiantown Gap, and Helen M. Cichon, 22, of Cleveland, Ohio.
A dinner was served at the home of Mr and Mrs Hummel in Ebenezer on Wednesday for a double birth day anniversary. Guests included Ethel King Hummel and her husband Corporal Harry W King overseas with a U S Army ordnance company, Levi King retired poultryman, Palmyra, plus Mrs Richard Rhode and Harry Hummel III. The dinner and festivities were greatly enjoyed.
Harrisburg report says Pennsylvania farmers hold about 570000 pigs as potential spring litters, a five percent drop from 1943. Feed shortages drive the wasp forecast of fewer fall-farrowed pigs with only 80000 sows to be bred between June 1 and December 1, down from 115000 last year.
Lebanon County Lt Frantz reports the military ballot canvass for the November election is near completion with about 3 651 names collected. Volunteers from the Lebanon County Council of Defense direct the drive while Paul L Strickler leads the city canvass. Security guidance urges interviewees to withhold any sensitive military information.
Hershey resident Lt. Richard Zentmeyer was awarded his second Air Medal for a direct torpedo hit on a heavy cruiser in Rabaul Harbor on November 1 last year. Admiral Halsey presented the medal at a ceremony before 3,000 cadets. Zentmeyer, 24, is a Kingsville flight instructor and former Tarawa and Wake Island participant.
William J. Cassell age 34 of 224 Chestnut Street, an employee at Lebanon Steel Foundry, suffered contusions and abrasions to his right leg and thigh when a 1300 pound casting fell on him at work. He was admitted to Good Samaritan Hospital at 8 25 p m and listed in good condition the next report.
Kathryn Louise Stoner age fifteen months of Lebanon Route 3 was brought to Good Samaritan Hospital after the family feared she swallowed a safety pin. An x ray showed no object and she was discharged.
A long list of donors completed a rush of contributions to the blood plasma bank at the Masonic Hall, 127 North Eighth Street. Howard Brigel, a blind man on 349 North Twentieth, gave a pint, and a father with two sons, John P. Schauer Sr and Jr, plus George Schauer, joined in. Mrs. Aaron Stager joined the Gallon Club with her eighth pint. Frank De Grazia a 39 year old foreman for LoCascio Construction Company at the Good Samaritan Hospital project received multiple wood splinters in the eyes when a wooden plank was struck with a sledge showering splinters at the scene.

Reports have been fled at the court house by a board of land damage viewers in two petitions against the state of Pennsylvania. In North and South Lebanon Townships along the Mt Zion Prescott road the viewers awarded damages of 1500 dollars for Baney Estate taking about one acre. Paul R Wolff and wife Mildred were awarded 2200 dollars for about a quarter acre. Petitioners claimed higher losses while state witnesses stated lower figures. Donny Clark and Arthur Kantor, both seniors at Lebanon High School, completed a six day bicycle journey from Lebanon to New York City and back. They traveled three days each way, staying at a YMCA in Easton, a Linden, New Jersey, home, and a hotel in Allentown. They reported good weather and sightseeing, including a visit to Donny Clark's grandmother in the Bronx.
2nd Lieut Warren Botz of Lebanon Ohio married Gladys Jernberg in Pocahontas Arkansas on June 3. The bride, 1940 Lebanon HS graduate, was a stenographer in Memphis before wedding. Botz, 1938 Lebanon HS graduate, served as a fighter pilot instructor after training at Camp Shelby Maxwell Field and Cape Institute.
Corporal John R. Kopecky, 23, from 1217 Brandywine St, serves in Col Don Blakeslee's P-51 Mustang group at RAF station England. The unit flew dawn to midnight over France during the invasion, dive bombing German trains and convoys and hunting Luftwaffe craft for over five hours. The group has 3939 enemy aircraft destroyed in the air and 186 on the ground. Kopecky enlisted in August 1942.
Richard Brown, 22, a fireman at the Hotel Stratford, was treated at Good Samaritan Hospital for a left thumb laceration after his hand struck while cutting kindling to make a fire. He was referred to a private physician for treatment.

Thirteen applications for membership were approved at the Fuhrman Post Veterans of Foreign Wars meeting, boosting local post membership to 738 and placing the unit fifth in Pennsylvania. The post will send forty six delegates to the state encampment in Wilkes-Barre, with Commander C. H. Smith leading the delegation. Robert Williams eleven, of Lebanon Route 3, fell from his bicycle Tuesday. He suffered a severe cut of the right knee and multiple abrasions to both arms and back. Eleven sutures were needed to close the knee laceration at Good Samaritan Hospital.
Patricia Firestine ten of Lebanon Route 1 was treated at Good Samaritan Hospital on Tuesday for ivy poisoning of the left foot and referred to the dispensary afterward.
