Two men were killed and eight injured when a gas well exploded near East Aurora, New York. Fire raged as workers planned to steam the pit and stud the casing with nitroglycerine to extinguish 15 million cubic feet of gas pressure. Child dies after poisoning tablets in Easton

Eight stowaways, four women, were found aboard the United States liner Republic in Hoboken after a customs inspector questioned a wet paint sign. Inspector Geary uncovered a hidden compartment under a stairway containing two more stowaways.
