Harry Hughes aged 18, a weigh-master at the American Iron and Steel Company plant on South Fourth street, inadvertently shot his hand while cleaning a revolver at 10 o’clock Monday evening, unaware it was loaded. He received treatment at the Good Samaritan Hospital from Dr John Walter.
Harvey Kessler of Wrightsville has been named agent at Mount Gretna park by President A. D. Smith of the Cornwall and Lebanon railroad. He has already assumed duties.
Hershey of the Lebanon credinary company has entered Aberdeen Langaster county along the Cornwall and Lebanon railroad line with a large separator plant. He will operate it in connection with Wa creamery in this city.
William Hower of Deryatowh appeared in the city this morning with last year’s apples grown by his father in law Tyrus Schmeltzer of Fryetown. The fruit was presented at the News office, described as perfectly preserved and fairly solid. It drew notable attention from onlookers.
Democratic county committee met at the courthouse on Monday afternoon and empowered the executive committee to decide between meetings. Chairman Bleistein will appoint the executive committee. Cyrus G. Rauch paid tribute to the late President Cleveland and temporary chairman Dr A C Hersh urged unity for the full ticket in the coming campaign.
John Deemer, 22, of Nexmont and a bank employee, was found in a field near his home with a gunshot wound to the heart. Relatives doubt suicide. authorities suspect foul play. The body was taken to Rexmont by undertaker. an inquest is set for this evening. Deemer was well liked in town and active in local societies. He is survived by a brother Frank, and two sisters Virginia and Hilda.
A train traveling at about 40 miles per hour struck a herd of forty cattle between Ketter and Woodside near Reading depot on Monday night. One animal’s body damaged a steward’s couch and derailed a freight car, leaving the scene obstructed for about half an hour.
The county commissioners clerk Frank W Light works with help on his farm in North Annville township during harvest. In his absence, duties of his office are neglected as his daughter Annie Liga, aged 18, acts as his assistant and creates disorder in the office leadership.
A P. and R. engine and a box car were disabled in a collision near the Twelfth street crossing around midnight. The side of a freight car was crushed and a car loaded with coke spilled its contents. The P. and R. wrecker cleared the debris shortly after the accident.
