Prosperity Day drew record crowds as Lebanon merchants joined with the NEWS and the Retail Affairs Committee of the Lebanon Chamber of Commerce. Visitors from across the county and neighboring areas shopped and explored, with motorists stopping to learn the cause of the bustling streets and some taking home bargains as souvenirs of their visit.
A first airplane ride near Five Points described with vivid detail and wonder. The narrator, Jane Frail, recalls the Gates Flying Circus, pilot Glyde EB Pangborn, and the exhilaration and fear of takeoff, loop, and landing in a five minute flight that leaves the reader eager for another ride.
Lebanon police were notified this morning of a robbery at the Annville freight house owned by the Reading company. The theft occurred Wednesday night and the time is unknown. Boxes of groceries and dry goods including hosiery were taken. the thief remains undiscovered.
Two traffic violators were fined ten dollars each in the morning Police Court session in the Mayor's office at City Hall. An Ephrata man ran red lights at the Eighth and Cumberland street intersection on August 23 at 3 35 P M. Officer Jacobs made the arrest. Another local man, arrested for speeding on Lehman street at the Seventh street intersection on August 24, was said to have been traveling 27 miles an hour.
Transit officials report City cars entering the city carried more passengers than the day before with numbers in the thousands. Exact totals to be released soon. Merchants credit Prosperity Day’s success to trolley and bus cooperation and expect free rides to boost future ridership.
The Perseverance band in one act with Harvey Steckbeck’s passenger trucks toured streets and county points. Guided by J K R Schropp News vice president and business manager the band serenaded the county Poor House and Widow’s Home WGS residents. A trolley and free rides drew large crowds from eight in the morning to five in the evening.
Elks from Lebanon and nearby towns travel by special train to Bethlehem for the Pennsylvania State Elks Association convention parade. The procession includes the newly formed Elks Band with a bass drum bearing lodge details, a silk banner, and a glistening American flag. Exalted Ruler J. Herbert Manbeck leads. attendees include Hershey and Palmyra delegations and members from Annyslie Prescott Myerstown Richland Womelsdorf.
Henry Bamberger Irwin Bam berger Raymond Henry and Clarence Walters all of Bamberger's garage on South Lincoln avenue enjoyed air plane rides on Wednesday. They say the rides exhilarated them and they hope for a similar opportunity soon. Miss Allee Bowman of Second and Canal streets also enjoyed an airplane ride on Wednesday and was pleased with the joy obtained.
In Johnson City a pan of seething candy toppled on a hot stove, killing four year old Alfes Tschomis and injuring siblings and two adults. Nine year old Helen Tschomis died soon after while six year old Catherina Econormon remained in critical condition. a man and a woman plus another child suffered injuries.
News carriers and their young successors will attend a Jiggs night at the Academy of Music. Jiggs himself sent word that the News boys should occupy front rows to enjoy the performance and the applause. Spang of the Academy and News publishers back the plan.
An open meeting of the Past Grands of the I O C F Lebanon county will be held in Fredericksburg this evening at 8 o clock. The Rev P M Holdeman of Jonestown will speak and music will be provided by lodge No 356 brothers. A large attendance is expected as the event is highly anticipated by Past Grands and their ladies, with all Odd Fellows Judges invited.
The Yiengst clan will hold its annual family reunion at Webbert's Grove in Mt Zion on Sunday September 6. The Acme band of Myerstown will provide music from 10 A M to 4 P M. All Yiengst friends are invited to attend, bring lunch.
L Raymond Riegert enters trespass suit in the local common pleas court on Wednesday for $1000 on behalf of Harry Kirst of Fredericksburg against neighbor Edwin Boeshore. Kirst seeks damages after Beeshore had previously sued over a porch overlap and alleged property rights violation in an alleyway between their houses, with a survey now on file and a court decree pending. EB, BE, McCurdy, and B dD. Siegrist represent Boeshora.
After two rain postponements the Bunker Hill Potato Club picnic was held on Alvin Blanch’s farm West Jonestown with success. Farm Agent A C Berger presented the club with the first U S Department of Agriculture charter to a Lebanon county club. The event highlighted coop among farmers, support from Bunker Hill Grange, and efforts of DP B Walmer, Alvin Blouch, and President Jacob Gerhart. Receipts will fund educational inspections.
Lebannon readers learn of Charles Trostle a Lebanon native serving in the 16th United States Infantry Headquarters Co. now in Ten Tai n China He left New York March 4 aboard the U S transport Crateau Thistry for Frisco via the Panama Canal at San Francisco they switched to the transport Thomas and sailed toward the Orient.
A young man appeared before the Mayor on the charge of parking his car too long on Eighth Street between Walton and Cumberland on Wednesday. He claimed he was unloading goods and could not move sooner. He received a reprimand and was discharged.
Dissinger relatives planned a reunion at Schaefferstown Park this coming Sunday. The event invites family members to gather for a day of shared memories and activities in the park setting.
Aug 27 Myerstown Pa a Ford truck owned by Earl Fenstermaker of West Main Ave was stolen from the church shedding near Friedens Lutheran across the alley from the owner’s home in broad daylight Tuesday afternoon. Mrs Fenstermaker heard the engine, saw the vehicle driven away but could not identify the thief. This follows another theft at the same location earlier in the week from Allen Bashore’s automobile.
Lona Sunday School holds its annual picnic on Saturday afternoon and evening with ample parking. Annville Band provides music. Sunday service at 9:09 worship at 10:00. Young Peoples Service led by Howard Krall. Pastor to speak on The Four Gospel at 8:15. Midweek meeting and church notices follow.
