Middletown police arrested a suspect in a highway robbery case after spotting him among pedestrians near Cumberland Street. The man, Charles Davenport, was taken to City Hall for processing, while a separate search for a second suspect continued.
A Sabbath Day family reunion in Lancaster County gathered in New Holland and surrounding towns including Barnville Mur- Meamstown to set a one year term for officers led by F. Killian as president and Ruth Killian as secretary. An executive committee was named, with John I Weaver delivering an address in Reading. The next reunion was planned for Ephrata Park.
Mrs J Ray Engle of Falmyrd gave an interesting address. A vocal solo, a ladies chorus and a pipe organ duet followed along with reports by secretaries. Attendance reached 667 with offerings of 28 44. The Men’s Bible class drew 150 and the day featured the second quarterly communion and a baptism.
A weekend storm socked Dauphin County with Paxtang Park hardest hit as water rose to five feet in Derry Street. Park crowds were stranded as the stream surged, forcing rescues by boat but the current proved too strong. West Shore towns reported damage. Rockville, Penbrook, Progress, and Linglestown faced power and transit disruptions.
Reports describe French forces pushing to relief posts including El Golan Des Sleas and Kelan Ia as new Rif tribes join in harassing the advance. South Lebanon Township High School alumnae plan their annual picnic on Thursday August 13. BOTS 10 depart for Fort Monroe with revised schedule. Colonel Smith notifies local units that start time shifts to 10:39 PM Friday. Two groups leave Amory, join at Reading at 12:16 PM, then sail by train to Baltimore. Trucks depart later, assembling at Lancaster before Fort Monroe.
Joseph Yeager reports a seven passenger car gave him a lift on a Lebanon Road ride from Allentown to Myers town. He later discovered his wallet containing $45 was missing. He asks Chief Sealer to help recover the money, believing it was left in the vehicle.
Contractor Charles White and Sons were involved in a road accident. The father was treated at a Lebanon sanatorium and later confined at home with bruises and shock. His son George suffered a bruised lung and remained hospitalized with doctors awaiting further symptoms. The wrecked car sustained only top damage, and police officer Willas, a son-in-law of Mr. White, identified the vehicle at the scene and arranged transport to a local garage.
Mrs. Sarah N Shaffer aged 88 died Sunday night at 11 16 at the home of her granddaughter Mrs Join Loser in Cleona after 17 weeks bedridden. A widow of a Civil War veteran she lived most of her life in Palmyra and Lebanon. Survived by son Archie Harrisburg sister Mrs Loving Rauch Harrisburg three grandchildren John Loser Olive Livering Jon Fox.
Judge Henry issued a final decree permitting private sale of Emma C. Hotz estate property in North Lebanon Township. Executor Cleary G. Light oversees sale to Anon Haytg for $3,000, with EW Miller presenting the papers.
Deeds recorded show Robert W. Snyder transferring property at Richland to Charles Vronana for 22 dollars. Milford B Maurer transfers to Rosa Beatty.
Judge Henry approved a charter for the United Christian Cemetery Association of Campbell town. B E McCurdy, solicitor for the group, had filed weeks earlier and showed proper advertisement and legal compliance, leading to a final order and charter authorization.
Rev and Mrs Raymond Kline of Lebanon now living in New Ringgold Pa welcomed a daughter at 10 20 this morning at the local hospital. The infant weighs nine pounds and is reported in excellent health. The mother is Marie Herb of the city. Rev Kline is on his annual vacation, which brought the birth here, and many friends extend congratulations.
Zinn Bachman of Zinn's Mill offers all the water from springs on his farm to the people of Lebanon at no cost. Residents have boiled water for domestic use in recent weeks due to July 26 rains and floods. The water is reputed to be the best in the area.
Alderman Robert J. Miller of 22 Scull Street stepped outside on Friday night for the first time in three weeks of illness. He briefly enjoyed the fresh air this morning and quipped about being out of jail. Friends celebrate his rapid recovery.
Six Hill church boys left this morning for a week long vacation at the seashore. The party includes Lihoud Harvey Samanl Leroy Heilman Elmer Trostatter and Warren Houser. They will meet uncle Dr Eugene A Sellman in Philadelphia and then travel to his cottage at High Point New Jersey for the remainder of the week.
Carl Carmany register of Zion Lutheran troops and Donald Harper scoutmaster of city troops left for Camp Strause for one week. They will observe camp routine and assist Chief Executive Abbott in orderly duties during the stay.
Mrs. M. H. Qrelner and her daughter of Cylebrook Road returned from a Western Auto trip to Cleveland Ohio. They visited Mrs. W. H. Greenwald there and spent days at Erie Pennsylvania. They attended Akron Ohio centennial and toured other cities en route.
The Susquehanna river at Long Level claimed two more victims when Hilliard and Earl Stein aged 17 and 14 drowned while swimming with friends. The elder tried to save the younger, and two York City rescuers arrived after a 15 mile trip. Kenneth Spangler had drowned at the same spot six weeks earlier, and the river's dangerous undercurrent was noted.
Lancaster Pennsylvania faces a second day of heavy rain as floods reassert, submerging sections of state highways near Conewago and Coney creeks and trapping traffic. Nearby Allentown and Hazleton report fire alarm glitches linked to damaged cables and a missing man found exhausted in woods after weeks away.
Sunbury Pa Clark Rupp was bitten by a tarantula while handling bananas. He cut the bite with a knife, let it bleed, then applied iodine and antiseptics. His arm swelled but doctors say his quick action will save his life.
A barn on Fontana Grange property burned, destroying eleven loads of hay stored for the Grange and a load of oats owned by Milton Bomberger. The wagon and a harrow belonging to Bomberger were also burned. Replacement costs exceed 5000 dollars, but the Grange does not plan to rebuild as the building is not needed.
Miss Mabel Rittle of Avon and Mrs. Wisler of Williamsboro completed a more than 6000 mile journey by Ford with the Lincoln Highway as their main route. Beginning June 12 in Johnstown they traveled west to Portland Oregon then Yellowstone Park, Oregon Trail and Columbia River Highway to the Pacific coast. After visiting Portland for an International Co. E. convention they followed the Oregon Trail to its end and back toward Pocatello Idaho then Salt Lake City and Pike's Peak Ocean to Ocean Highway. The trip concluded in Pennsylvania with fond memories.
Four cases of disorderly conduct led to ten arrests by city officers weekend days. Hearing before Acting Mayor Chas. Donough. several drunks cited. One group fined ten dollars each after fighting on Chestnut Street. another trio charged after alley brawl. a man with a shotgun cited but not used.
Members of St Mark's Reformed Church Young Peoples society plan a Tuesday hike to Light's Grove near Lebanon. They will depart from the church in the early hour and spend most of the outing toasting marshmallows and roasting wieners.
