A series of earthquakes centered on Hyogo and Kyoto prefectures rocked Osaka Kobe and Kyoto parts of western Japan on May 23 and 28. Buildings collapsed fires erupted and transport lines were disrupted as rescuers sped to the affected zones.
The American Red Cross, which raised $10,000 in this county for the 1928 Japanese earthquake victims, will extend similar relief to the current disaster area in Japan if early magnitude reports prove true. Red Cross officials convened to plan relief measures and, upon receiving official reports, President Coolidge as Red Cross head is expected to cable sympathy and offer aid.
Indianapolis May 23 Attorneys prepared final arguments for the public service commission to reopen the case on bus traffic in Indianapolis. The Indianapolis Street Railway Company argues that the Peoples' Motor Coach Company is not a common carrier because it has refused to haul Negroes on its buses. Both companies seek authority to operate buses in Indianapolis under the Moorehead bus law.
In Tippecanoe circuit court Charles Lesley requests appointment of a guardian for James M. Zion of Clark's Hill due to age infirmities. Zion owns a large Indiana apple orchard with national renown and has long been active in politics including an independent gubernatorial bid.
Plymouth Indiana May 23 The State Bank at Bourbon ten miles east was robbed of ten thousand dollars in cash and bonds estimated at two to five thousand. Ten men attacked the bank using nitroglycerine to blow the safe as night watchman George Spindler was bound and detained. A moving picture operator was fired upon but grazed. streetwarning kept residents indoors while bandits battered the front door with railroad iron. Several bandits were seen at work and two men visited the telegraph office before the heist.
Chicago May 28 James C Callan ward politician was jailed after being accused of pressuring juror candidates for the defense in the Shepherd murder trial. Callan admitted talking to a former DOJ agent Barry but denied promoting his jury role. Eight more jurors are sought as a Saturday session proceeds with four sworn in plus other potential jurors.
Mrs. I. E. Damron of Columbus Ohio and her daughter Mrs. A B Wilder, 22, were seriously injured when a Packard limousine swerved off the Crawfordsville road four miles west of Lebanon, crashed into a barbed wire fence, and slid along the fence. Both were taken to Williams hospital. driver escaped injury. The women were en route from Columbus to Danville Illinois.
Troop Two of the Girl Scouts presented Cin drella at the high school auditorium Friday night, clearing over $25. Funds will buy uniforms and money goes toward the $10 brick donation to the National Girl Scout Home in New York City. The cast, directed by Mrs. Robert Crowder with A V Stewart, featured a musical interlude by Miss Harriet Morrow and four boys in a quartet.
About thirty men gathered Friday evening at the Chamber of Commerce Hall in The Reporter building for a meeting of Indiana Condensed Milk Company haulers. Fred Spray led the session with talks by Lester Boatman and Lawrence Wright plus several haulers on serving farmers. Refreshments included ice cream Wilson's chocolate milk and cigars.
Dr. John D. Coons of Lebanon was elected president of the Indiana Institute of Homeopathy at the Lincoln Hotel in Indianapolis. He succeeds Dr. H. L. Baker as president and will lead officers including J. S. Slabaugh Nappanee and L. L. Dill Logansport as first and second vice presidents. Del egates to the American Institute meeting in New York June 21 to 25 were named, with the group marking the 100th anniversary of homeopathy in the United States.
Indianapolis May 23 Nearly three hundred high school athletes gathered here for the Indiana High School Athletic Association state track meet. Eighty nine high schools are represented with trials under way at the Technical High School athletic field. Finals slated for 1 30 this afternoon. Lebanon High School sends two competitors Smith and Kincaid who qualified at Kokomo last Saturday.
Judge Frank Hutchinson grants divorce to Mary F Edwards from Carl H Edwards. Edwards restores maiden name Mary P F Gambold. Court records show final decree in Boone Circuit Court.
Cyrus Henry Wooley, son of Mr and Mrs JF Wooley of Lebanon, is a candidate for the bachelor of arts degree from Wabash College this June. He has been prominent in college activities and is a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity.
Kiwanis clubs from Lafayette and Indianapolis will play a 20 player team match at Alena County Club on Thursday June 4 starting at 1 pm. The neutral course choice aims to balance competition with Lebanon Kiwanis aiding Lafayette to complete its squad. The losing team must host a chicken dinner for the winners.
A hearing on the T H I E traction line petitions to run a motor bus service between Indianapolis and Lafayette will be held June 17 by the Indiana Public Service Commission. Two petitions, Nos. 21 and 22, seek permits for operation between Indianapolis and Lafayette. The notice does not specify routes, but it is believed both Frankfort Lebanon routes and the new Thorntown road may be involved. Local employees were not informed of plans.

The scouts earned test advancement and received an invitation to act as guards for the park opening staged by Battery C. Virgil Wallace files for a writ in Boone circuit court to return his wife Margaret Wallace to his home in Frankfort. A large audience attended the cantata The Garden of Flowers closing two performances in the high school gymnasium. The elaborate, well costumed production delighted attendees and was presented by the Young Women's Mission Circle of the Central Christian church.

Indianapolis detectives search for a kidnapper after a man abducted 6 year old Jane Gallfarb on her way to school yesterday. The assailant drove off with the girl in his automobile and treated her kindly before releasing her near her home. Jane’s 8 year old sister witnessed the abduction and raised the alarm.
Mrs Paul Smith and her sister Mrs May Smith are spending the weekend in Indiana. Mrs May Smith has been visiting for several days at the McMullen home.
