Lebanon citizens and mail users were urged by Postmaster Harry T. Thompson to support Better Mailing Week from June 1 to 7. He warned of vast losses from misaddressed mail and urged return addresses on all mail, proper addressing, and better mail handling to reduce dead letters and lost funds.
Rome May 18 Catholic leaders in Indiana expressed universal approval of Bishop Chartrand of Indianapolis being named archbishop of Cincinnati. The 54 year old priest, born in St Louis in 1870, has served as bishop of Indianapolis for seven years. Bishop MacNicholas, formerly bishop of Duluth, is transferred to Indianapolis.
Miss Pearl Shoemaker and Miss Alma Dye spent Sunday with Mr and Mrs Dessie Shoemaker at their home east of town. Miss Shoemaker Miss Dye Loren Ogd bern and Loren Souders spent the evening in Indianapolis.
Mrs. Alfred Chapman arrives back in Indianapolis following a brief visit with her sister Mrs. Virgil Buntin.
Lebanon Boy Scouts sponsor the comedy Excuse Me to raise funds for a new Scout headquarters in Lochinvard Hall. Four troops report strong ticket sales and expect large crowds for two showings, with a baseball and bat prize for the top seller. Tickets available from any Scout or Scoutmaster.
Lebanon Elks celebrate the public opening of the new $60,000 Lodge Home on West Washington Street with a two day event. More than a hundred guides welcome visitors, about 200 toured the building by 4 pm, and two hundred more are expected tonight. Music by Stewart Amphion Orchestra, carnations for women, fruit punch, and an informal dance mark the celebration which runs until midnight. The lodge room becomes a ball room and plants from Chicago decorate the reception areas.
Lebanon High qualified two athletes for the state meet in Indianapolis after a Kokomo sectional. Smith earned 12 points with high jump wins and pole vault tie while Kincaid placed high in the 220 and 100 dashes. Lebanon finished third with 16 points behind Kokomo’s 43 and Frankfort’s 19.
A cooperative effort by Lebanon merchants brings a Community Day sale on Wednesday with a Mas Festival twist. Dollar bargains at fifteen stores plus across the town, with many shops offering exceptional discounts and pagewide announcements in The Reporter. Participating outlets include Adler & Co, Lebanon Dry Goods, Star Drug, The Tire Man, Murphy, Rex Shinn Grocery, Lenox Brothers, Grandison & Barr, Lewis & Storm, Remy’s, McCord’s Market, Morgan Shoe, Art Wall Paper, Moore’s stores, Oak Drug, and Shafers 5 and 10.
The Alen Country Club hosts the first of a series of golf matches Wednesday on the local course against Frankfort. Frankfort brings twenty experienced players who have faced top central Indiana opponents. Lebanon golfers, newer to match play, hope to gain experience though face a strong Gem City squad. Matches begin at 1 30 p m with rosters due at 1 30 to avoid delays.
Stephen Worley aged 54 died Sunday at 11 am at his home near Slabtown after a year with diabetes. Heart trouble was the immediate cause. Born in Claypool Indiana he lived in Boone county since 1883. Survived by wife Alice Worley son Virgil Worley brothers O P Worley of Hagerstown and J M Worley of Lebanon sister Mrs FE Zenor. He belonged to the Improved Order of Red Men at Roostown. Funeral Tuesday at 10 am at Slabtown Methodist church. Burial Bethel Cemetery near Slabtown.
Frank Akers aged 76 died at his farm north of Lebanon Saturday night after a long Bright's disease illness. A native of Ripley County Indiana he lived on the Lebanon area farm 32 years. Survived by six children and three grandchildren with a wide kin network. funeral Tuesday at 10 with Rev. Ora McDaniel. burial in Oak Hill cemetery.
Winnebago Tribe No. 36 and Narramattah Council No. 10 held a Sunday memorial in the Red Men hall for their dead. Rev. Wilbur Sharp delivered the address on Freedom Friendship and Char, with floral tributes from Pocahontas and Red Men representatives. Music by Mrs. Maggie Fletcher Miss Laverne Bart Miss Mary Alice Smith and a male quartet. Enam in charge by Mrs. Glen Eaton and Len Bart.
Stamford detectives pursued two suspected leaders of a bootleg gang after a street battle in which three men died. Frank and Guiseppi Vartuli were slain. Paul Diangelo died later from knife wounds. Hospitals in nearby cities were checked for a wounded slayer.
Paris reports French troops under General Freudenburg relieved the Boutounneur outpost after sharp fighting. Riffian forces used field artillery and reinforced on the eastern front, while General Columbat’s troops reached El Kelsa Sless. At Alouez, Captain Deboin and Senegalese defenders held out with dwindling ammo until relief arrived, earning Hero medals.
Glaring headlights were said to be responsible for a collision eight miles west of Lebanon on the Crawfordsville road. Vehicles driven by Henry Kern of Indianapolis and Sylvester Barvel of Crawfordsville were damaged. Kern drove a Ford truck and Barvel a Ford coupe. Kern car taken to Johnson-Moore garage for repairs.
Mrs John M Lofland aged 78 of Crawfordsville area died May 16 after a paralysis stroke. She was born March 31 1858 daughter of Aaron and Martha Snyder and married to John M Lofland in 1875. Survived by four children two brothers and five partial kin. funeral held at her Crawfordsville home with burial in Crawfordsville cemetery.
Indianapolis May 18 police search for a bill fold and pocket book carried by Julius Shetzley 69 disappeared May 8. His body was found in White River by boys swimming Saturday. A theory of death by own action was abandoned when a sack weighted with rock had been tied around the body in a way that ruled out self harm.
The Indiana Rebekah Assembly met in Indianapolis with sessions at the Grand Lodge Hall I O C F building. Delegates from a Lebanon lodge include Mrs Renz Limbert Mrs Thomas Caldwell and Mrs Sam Storm. Mrs Langjahr past president attends along with members from this city arriving for the convention.
Miss Mourine McCormick of Columbia City spent the weekend with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Z. M. McCormick.
Adler & Co announce a one day sale of manufacturer and importer sample jewelry in Lebanon for Community Day May 20. The event offers more than a thousand pieces priced up to three dollars and is part of a broader effort to attract local buyers ahead of a larger Indianapolis sale.
Lebanon Indiana spent 365.85 to run the May 5 city primary, 2364 ballots at 0.15 each. Printing ballots totaled 62060. ward boards earned 49.60 each. three election commissioners were paid 12. Candidates must file sworn campaign expense statements by June 4 or face fines from 300 to 1000 dollars and possible imprisonment.
Indianapolis May 18 Roscoe Carpenter president of the Twentieth Century Motion Picture Company announces formation of a nationwide theatrical enterprise aimed at discovering latent dramatic talent and mounting production. The company will oppose the motion picture trust and current censorship practices and has linked with a national venture after three years of incorporation.
Chicago May 18 The state will demand the death penalty for William D Shepherd on trial for killing his wealthy ward Billy McClintock The court crowded with supporters reporters and jurors as the trial opened Shepherd denied the charges insisting a plot to rob him of a fortune He reportedly sought a quack doctor to obtain poison to kill the boy and his guardian for the will.
Louisville reports heavy wagering on the Kentucky Derby with more than $600000 placed. Many eastern horses began returning to major tracks, led by Giff Cochran's Flying Anthony winner, while other favorites like Quatrain failed to show.
Troop Four in Lebanon plans to open a new unit at Lochinvar Hall. Membore will lead the opening meeting with a one time start. Parr urged a single inaugural gathering for the new troop to begin shortly.
