The opening round saw Zionsville Advance Jamestown Lebanon eliminate Thorntown Whitestown Goldsmith Perry Central. Lebanon beat Perry Central 34 7 as Schuler led with crain Stewart and Cook supporting.
The Kissenger of Columbia City asks for third reading as final action nears in the Indiana House. A Friday vote was delayed as a quarter of representatives were away. Opponents warn of politics intruding into road building. supporters say it breaks the entrenched highway bureaucracy. The measure would replace the state highway commission with a governor appointed four member board. The House also moved to penalize amusement ticket speculation. Mendenhall fair primary bill remains in limbo after indefinite postponement.
Lebanon leads Friday night tally with 25 and 34 for Thoerntown and Lebannon, while Advance and Whitestown notch 23 and 9. Saturday morning results show Jamestown 40 and Perry Central 7, with Goldsmith at 20.
Lebanon led 34 to 7 at halftime as Crane and Beck anchored the offense with Stewart, Clay, Dickerson and Brown scoring. Substitutes Havens for Crane and Ashley for Harlan provided depth. Cook led Tier goals with 6 points followed by Harrison 4 and Stewart 2. Fouls highlighted by Stewart 3 and Cook 1.

Jamestown high school defeated Goldsmith of Tipton county 40 to 20 in the sectional opener. D Steele led Jamestown with six early field goals, finishing with seven, while Rob erts and B Emmert excelled in ball handling. Goldsmith was held to four field goals per half as Mahaffey and Phares led the losers. Substitutions noted. referee Brown.
The Thorntown I. O. O. F. hosted the county Odd Fellows meeting at their hall. The Lebanon team performed first degree work and the Terhune team second degree work. Speeches were delivered by William Wilson D A Nease T E Bradshaw and Rev R R O ha ver. Refreshments followed with a brief social hour.
The Kersey Thompson Shoe Company opens in the former Crews Hart building on South Lebanon Street. Owners Donald Kersey and Clay Thompson, with years in shoe sales, welcome customers as balloons and favors mark the opening while shipments of the full line arrive.
Halifax report notes 12 000 coal miners walked off the job in eastern Canada the largest dispute in years. Ten Crepe Breton mines owned by British Empire Steel Corporation are affected with maintenance workers also quitting. Troops standby as authorities fear unrest after a union demand for four day weeks and restoration of company store credit was refused.
The Reporter produced a four page illustrated color folder promoting Lebanon and its trade advantages. Carl C. Carr, former Boone County boy and head of C. C. Carr Advertising Agency, praised the folder after finding it in his Florida office. Carr noted his extensive publishing background and Lebanon ties.
Additional gifts to the Sullivan Miners Relief Fund have been collected at the Boone County Red Cross office. Secretary Mrs. Riley will send the funds to headquarters next week. Contributions include Mrs. Charles Herr two dollars Mrs. Georgietta Brindle fifty cents Mr and Mrs L W Fuller one dollar and Miss Helen Fuller one dollar.
The Citizens Telephone Company of Zionsville won a rate increase in an order issued by the Indiana Public Service Commission. New rates set include business phones at 2.50, residence 2.25, two party residence 2, four party residence 1.75, rural 1.75, with extensions at 0.50 each and all rates listed as net.
In Champaign Illinois Purdue was defeated 37 to 27 by the Illini basket five. Martin led Illinois with five baskets. In Bloomington Ohio State aimed to seal the Big Ten title by beating Indiana, while Indiana remained runners up.
Fred Rhoades bowled 202 at Alen Country Club last night to reach the select 200 class. He expresses pride in the milestone and welcomes recognition.
Pre tourney favorites won widely with few surprises as state basketball championship play began. Martinsville repeated champions cruised, Anderson topped Colfax, Bedford outdid Williams, Columbus overwhelmed Vern Township, Kokomo defeated Middleton, Muncie beat Harrison, Vincennes scored 70 to 14 over Monroe City, Connersville crushed a weaker foe 65 to 8, Rochester beat Talia, Shelbyville doubled Geneva, Crawfordsville stayed strong, Short Ridge edged Technical, West Point beat Lafayette Jefferson, Washington overwhelmed Stilesville, Logansport edged Galveston by two.
Moody Van Court of Lafayette was arrested by Thorntown night officer Bristley at 2 a m. He drove into Thorntown with a flat tire, appeared intoxicated, and a gun and a quart of white mule were found in his car after a search by Bristley and Marsha Johnson.
A Friday pep session at the high school aimed to boost cheer for the sectional tournament under way. Rev A E Cowley of the Lebanon Kiwanis Club urged clean play and victory backed by Kiwanis support. Principal Tatlock oversaw the program followed by songs and a spirited yell fest.
Mr and Mrs B L McCray of Indianapolis are weekend guests of Mr and Mrs E E Clay and daughter Miss Lucile in the city.
L M Ross of Lebanon on the Wabash College debate team that beat Indiana Central College. Donald K Bowen of Lebanon on the Indiana University team that defeated Purdue debaters at Bloomington. George Cross of this city on the second Wabash College debate team.
A. D. Stone, Hoosier State Motor Club rep, urged Lebanon to improve parking and curbside service, arguing travelers spend about four dollars per stop and that friendly police and tidy signs boost retail revenue. He warned rough treatment and ugly signs deter visitors and harm business.
In a tense Lebanon sectional opener, Zionsville upset Thorntown 25 to 22 after a seesaw first half. Mills, Todd and Smith led the winners with multiple baskets while Hawkins and Spencer paced Thorntown’s effort. Referee Brown oversaw a brisk, crowd-pleasing contest as Advance defeated Whitestown 23 to 9 in the night’s second game.
Athens reports Stefanoff, a communist deputy, was shot as he left the military club in central Sofia. An arrested assailant confessed, accusing government adherents as plot instigators in the March 7 dispatch.
