The 23 Lebanon postoffice workers see an average salary rise of over 300 dollars per year, totaling about 7500 dollars for the office staff. Rural carriers gain four cents per mile, with routes of 24 to 35 miles and carriers earning roughly 860 dollars more yearly under the new law.
The $500 bequest to First Christian church as a permanent fund for the pastor's safety has yielded no income. Church trustees report in circuit court that the funds are invested in five shares of Sterco Steel Co. stock, a reissue from Steel Fabricating Corp. Andrew Harmon of four miles west of Zionsville plans to quit farming but will not sell his three mules. They have lived on the place for 20 years since age three, now of little value, yet they will be buried on the farm when they die. The animals respond to Harmon's voice and come to the fence when freed in the field.
Indianapolis on March 6 reports a free for all fight at police headquarters after a confrontation between Inspector Walter White and Police Captain Charles Sumner over alleged double crossing. Lieut. L B Forsythe and Captain Fred Drinkitt sustained injuries as the melee ended with White prevailing.
Directors of the Boone County Farm Bureau will meet Saturday at 10 o clock in the courthouse for an important session. Preliminary plans will be made for the wheat pool and reports on a membership drive will be presented.
Indianapolis March 6 All records of the state board of accounts relating to the investigation of the state highway commission were locked in a safe at Marion county courthouse today. The records were ordered impounded by Judge Collins to keep secret the information leading to the indictment of John D. Williams director of the commission Farl Crawford commission member and four others. The report of the accounts was to be made public but the records are to remain under cover until the trial of six men on charges of embezzlement and larceny begins.
One woman and two men filed declarations of candidacy for city offices with City Clerk Smith today, the first filing day. Velma Smithson sought Republican nomination for city treasurer. Miller and Martin seek councilman posts in the second ward, with Miller a former councilman and Martin a two term treasurer. Prospective candidates have until April 5 to file. The primary is in May with nine city offices on the ballot. Chairmen will appoint election boards, and candidates may withdraw April 6 to 10.
Short funeral services were held this afternoon for Mrs. Mary Swails aged 74 who died yesterday after a week's illness with apoplexy at the home of her brother in law John Eaton near Mechanicsboro. The body was taken to Acton Indiana to the home of her daughter Mrs. Harry Cohee for services and interment Sunday. She lived in Boone county five years and in the Eaton home three years. She was a Baptist and a member of the Eastern Star at Acton. Surviving: two sisters Mrs. Sam Burgess and Mrs. Jake Ferguson of near Sheridan and one brother Ben Reed of Frankton. Her husband John Swails preceded her in death eighteen years ago.
Morris, operator of the Sheridan to Indianapolis line, has launched a new route between Anderson and Crawfordsville. The service will make one round trip daily, departing Anderson at 8:00 AM and returning at 4:00 PM, via State Route 88 through Westfield Joliet and Lebanon. He declined offers from the Red Bull line to take over his Sheridan route.
Indianapolis March 6 Basketball opens the annual race for Indiana high school state net title. A record 672 teams enter 64 sectionals with play starting today in Indianapolis Martinsville Shelbyville Winchester and Versailles. Regionals March 18 then eight regionals at Evansville Fort Wayne Mary Bloomington Anderson Richmond Kokomo and Frankfort. The eight section winners advance to state finals March 20 and 21 at Indianapolis Exposition building with 16 survivors. Martinsville Bloomington Monrovia Smithville appear strong. Bedford Washington Mitchell and others vie for regional berths.
The Noble Beck Trophy will be awarded to Lebanon High School’s best all around basketball player at season end. A three-person fan committee plus coach and faculty member will judge sportsmanship, scholarship, and citizenship. Past winners include Bob King in 1923 and Art Lasley last year, with Beck a loyal alumnus funding the award to boost sportsmanship.
Brigadier General William Mitchell reverts to colonel after Secretary Weeks declines to reappoint him to air service chief. Fechet, commanding at Kelly Field, Texas, is recommended to succeed him. Mitchell, at Fortress Monroe testing anti aircraft guns, has three years to retirement.
