Garrison Arrested On Bribery And Illegal Gambling
Washington reports that Jim Garrison the New Orleans district attorney was arrested on federal charges of bribery illegal gambling and obstruction of law enforcement along with two New Orleans police officers and two others. Attorney General John N. Mitchell announced the arrests noting five more people are being sought. The case cites payments up to 1500 dollars a month to protect illegal pinball gambling and includes tape recordings from some transactions.

Prisoner Fails To Escape At Indiana Prison
Walter Lee Martin 34, an Indiana State Prison trusty, tried to recruit Walter Smyers 24 to smuggle him to Michigan by offering a $10,000 reward to a guard. Smyers alerted authorities and the warden hid in brush, capturing Martin as he appeared to go along with the plan. Martin, sentenced from Starke County last February to 110 years, had been placed on trusty status a week earlier and worked on the dairy farm driving cows to a barn at 2 a.m.

The Lebanon Community School Board to meet at noon Thursday in the Superintendent's office to organize officers for the 1971-72 year. Dr. Russell W. Hardin steps down. George Larr to replace him as president with H Gene Etter as vice president and Ida Martin as secretary. The board also updated pay scales for non certified staff and granted a two year contract with raises for Assistant Superintendent Robert McFrye and modest increases for janitors and district secretaries. Sick leave rules were adjusted to allow accrual beyond 60 days. Ruth Lucas advanced to 5900 dollars annually.

Draft Boards Lose Power In Indiana Quibble Ends
Indianapolis upi Draft boards in Indiana will lose power to induct at end of business today as Col B J Holmes deputy director of the Selective Service System notes the state will still register classify and issue numbers but will not send induction notices or notices to report for physicals The change affects as many as 300 draft age men and Indiana's July August quotas are estimated at 200 to 300 draftees with the system remaining active in other functions.
