Weekend Toll On Highways Stands At 16
Indiana posted at least 732 traffic fatalities for 1969 after a weekend total of 16. The toll included Kathryn Ritchie of Elkhart and several others in crashes across Gary, Hobart, Huntington, Kokomo, Lafayette, Nob le County, New Castle, Princeton and other towns. Two teens from Indianapolis were among the injured and one fatality occurred on U S 40 near Cumberland.

Friday Garbage Pick-up Thursday No Parking For Parade Route
Lebanon city officials urge co operation during July 4th celebrations. Garbage will be collected Thursday for Saturday’s route and there is no Friday pick-up. Parking bans apply on streets used for the parade including Washington Street, the square areas, and streets from Main to Memorial Park. Offices close Friday for the holiday, with a three day weekend.

Race Violence Spreads To Fort Wayne And Swayzee Fire
Racial disturbances in northeastern Indiana spread from Kokomo and Marion to Fort Wayne and Swayzee. Police report window breakage and looting in Fort Wayne during a two hour window. At Swayzee the Grant County Lumber Co was destroyed in a fire likely arson with losses above 200000 dollars. Fire believed to be linked to earlier violence with a roof firebomb. Civil defense patrolled the area while authorities investigated.

Wreck, alleged rape tie up Indiana trooper late Sunday
An Indiana State Trooper investigated a bizarre incident near Lebanon after a late night crash involving a 1969 Chevrolet and a 1959 truck. A hitchhiking couple claimed to have been with the driver, a woman later reporting an assault. the driver, Charles N. Ramey, faced a 10 day Boone County Jail term and fines while the case awaited charges. Nearby, a late model station wagon was side swiped by a truck pulling a horse trailer with minor injuries and $500 in damages. Earlier, a Sunday morning crash on SR 532 led to parking and fictitious registration charges with about $450 in damages.
