Herbert H Evans longtime Indiana state lawmaker and attorney from New Castle died after months of illness. He served 18 years in the state legislature and was active in Republican politics. Captain Smith will officially represent Battery in the dedication of the new Armory on July 4. Private Ralph J. Martin Sergeant Herachel Lovingsons Corporal F Pake and Private Robert L. Melaughlin also returned home by car for furloughs.
Washington June So UT An estimated 730000 youths age 21 will register for selective service tomorrow. A large portion will be drafted into the army in coming months to help reach the 900000 man quota set by President Roosevelt for the new year. Draft boards nationwide will register all young men liable under the revised system. Many will be chosen for service due to good physical condition and fewer dependents. Roosevelt announced an executive order authorizing induction of 906080 selectives from July 1 1941 to June 30 1942, the maximum allowed by law, presuming the system remains in force.
A memorial service for deceased members of the relief corps was held Sunday afternoon in Powell Chapel. White candles, palms, and large flower baskets adorned the altar while American flags fluttered in the breeze from electric fans. Women entered from the west to present the names of cemeteries represented, honoring deceased members of the corps.
