New York June 30 Jack Dempsey renowned fighter faced a life threatening condition after surgery for a gangrenous appendix. Doctors warned peritonitis had set in and his wife Hannah Williams was kept from his room as he fought for recovery at Poly Clinic Hospital.
Washington reports a pending cabinet shakeup with H Woodring likely to leave as secretary of war to become High Commissioner for the Philippines. If declined, Francis Sayre could be offered the post while Joulx Johnson may replace Woodring, with McNutt pursuing a 1948 Democratic bid.
Chicago driver Jimmy Snyder, 80, was killed at the Cahokia track south of East St Louis during a 0.5 mile dirt oval midget race. Snyder, a former milkman and father of three, had led most of the 30 laps before colliding in the south turn as he edged toward the inside rail. Indianapolis report says 38 year old Vincent Jackson, who was saved from a cave-in at a St Imantia site, died of an apparent complication after hospital transfer. Coroner notes the fatal injury may have worsened by the fall and ride to hospital.

Charles Thomas Bronaugh 17 of New Ross dies in Witham hospital after a truck crash 1 mile southwest of Lebanon. He had delivered to Thompson farm and on return the vehicle left the road near Old Onion church, toppled, and struck fence. He regained consciousness briefly, drove to George Brindle farm, collapsed, and died shortly after arrival. Coroner Swiggett notes crushed right side and fractured ribs.
Chicago police killed a 20 year old gunman with a petty thief record after he fired on four officers who had him and a second man surrender. The slain man was Steve Melish. the companion, believed to be his 19 year old brother Edward, escaped.
The Business and Professional Women's Club will conduct a fundraiser on April 4 6 and 7 to benefit Girl Scouts in the area. All contributions go to the Girl Scout program with donations accepted at Hoare County State Bank via Mrs. Ben Herr. James J. Perkins president of the Lebanon Lions enjoins community backing.

Sixty eight business houses across Lebanon agreed to half day closings on Thursdays starting July 18 through August. Forty eight will shut at 12 noon for the rest of the day. Participating firms include banks loan companies beauty shops shoe stores and clothing outlets.
The Lions Penny Ice Fund received no donations today marking the first blank day since opening. Several clubs pledged future gifts while many individuals plan to contribute later. If July and August bring heat, more funds will be needed for ongoing relief work in Lebanon.
Washington June 30 The House approved a 1.7556 billion relief bill in modified form to retain a single administrator and cut 43 million from the Senate total. The vote stood 321 to 23 after a two minute ovation for Rep Woodrum who said the bill directs WPA to clean its own house. Republican readers also supported the measure noting reservations yet backing the tilt.
Washington June 30 Democratic campaign head Pat Drewry Virginia says he opposes a third term for any president. He cites principle and tradition, stressing opposition applies whether the president is a Democrat or Republican and that Roosevelt should not alter long standing custom.

Mrs Della Downing Jones 55 wife of Prof M M Jones Lebanon high school faculty died at home on Frankfort Road after two years of illness. She was born in Wayne County Ohio and married in 1910. Survived by husband two children Miss Marjorie M Jones Elbert L Jones and sister Mrs Ada Irene Portsmith. Funeral arrangements incomplete at Bratton funeral home. She held Friends church birth right membership in Waynesville. The couple moved to Lebanon in 1912 from Ohio.
London reports say a conference of high ranking British naval officers and staff from all squadrons east of Suez may meet in Singapore to update Far East defense coordination in case of emergency. Admiralty could not confirm. seen as extension of the Pacific defense conference in New Zealand. Potential attendees include Vice Admiral Sir Percy Noble, Commodore T B Drew, and Vice Admiral J F Somerville.
Indianapolis crowd greets Paul V. McNutt at Monument Circle as he urges retention of American control of the Philippines beyond 1948 unless the Tydings McDuffie act is altered. Philippine High Commissioner Paul V. McNutt, returning from a long absence, detrainned yesterday at Lebanon on route from Chicago to Indianapolis. He, with Mrs. McNutt and family, was greeted by Democratic leaders and an escort as they shifted to travel by motor toward their home near Tractors to spend time with relatives and finalize his Indianapolis homecoming address. The train carried other officials including Frank M. McHale and Frans McKinney, key figures in his pre nomination drive.
