Death for rape ruled cruel and unusual by high court
The Supreme Court, in a 7 to 2 decision, ruled it cruel and unusual to execute a rapist when no life was taken. The ruling vacuumed death sentences for rape in Georgia and Florida, affecting Ehrlich Coker and four other men. Justice White stated capital punishment for rape is disproportionate and forbidden by the Eighth Amendment.

St Joseph’s to mark 75th church anniversary in Lebanon

Inmate walks away after losing appeal at Indiana State Prison
Cleveland Smith, 35, disappeared around noon from an outside honor work detail two hours after the Indiana Court of Appeals rejected his 3 year sentence appeal for aiming a weapon. Warden and state police search Lake County bound. He wore blue denim work clothes when last seen.

Big Wheel Race crowns young drivers at Memorial Park
At Memorial Park Fourth of July event Beta Rho Beta Sigma Phi sponsored Big Wheel race drew over nine youngsters across four, five and six year old divisions. Lebanon Mayor Robert Campbell started the event with Greg Smith as emcee. Top four finishers in each division earned a place on the Big Wheel parade float. one minor mishap left a shin cut for Daniel Kincaid in a low key accident free day.

Lebanon high school star golfer in traffic accident surgery
Geff French, an 18 year old Lebanon High School graduate and Triangle Asphalt flagman, sustained a double compound fracture of the left leg after a noon crash on SR 39 five and a half miles south of Lebanon. He was taken to hospital and later transferred to Indianapolis. Others treated and released included Rhonda Sams and her daughter Heather. The incident involved multiple Triangle vehicles and a car driven by Orville Woody.
