Sidewalk Days Boost City Sales Across Downtown

With perfect weather shoppers filled downtown Northfield Shopping Center and Grant City for Sidewalk Days. Merchants offered clothing, furnishings, lawn and garden bargains as stores report brisk morning business. The event runs Saturday as part of the July 4 week festival, drawing homemakers and vacationers and signaling preparations for August Dollar Day ahead of school openings.

City Building Inspector Quits Over Apartment Job Drama

Lebanon and Boone County Building Inspector Floyd Williams resigns citing overruled inspections by Mayor Robert Campbell. Campbell and Acton signed off on a 48 unit project by Price And Dixon Builders after Williams had red tagged the site for underfloor water leaks. Campbell says he and Acton were present when fixes occurred and asserts budget limits prevent raises. A new inspector will be named with permits to be issued from the Municipal Building starting Monday.

Chilean Army Revolts In Attack On Allende Palace

In Santiago a section of the motorized army backed by tanks attacked La Moneda palace and the defense ministry as gunfire raged in Bulnes Plaza. Allende urged calm on national radio while troops loyal to his government prepared to respond.

Richmond fires scorch 21 businesses in racial flare up

In Richmond Indiana twenty one businesses were set afire in a predominantly black area of the northside with minor damage in most cases. The Motorcycle Shop suffered major damage after a delayed report. No arrests yet though suspects identified. Two teenagers were arrested at the Melody Roller Rink disturbance. Arrests also made at Huffman manufacturing plant where Fred A. Lewis and Brent J. Hogg faced weapons charges and July 26 trial date. Robbery reported at Miller Milk House with an attendant struck. Police mounted heavy patrols and deputies were summoned as pattern echoes past summers.

Two Boys Found Dead In Old Refrigerator Garage

In Indianapolis two boys Randy Dudley aged 5 and Herbert Goldsmith Jr. aged 8 were found suffocated inside a refrigerator in a garage near their homes. Police believe the children crawled in while playing and were trapped when the door closed. no foul play is suspected. The incident follows a two and a half hour search by parents who reported them missing. Indiana law bans leaving refrigerators without doors or safe equipment to prevent such accidents.

Boone Council Set To Discuss 1974 Local Option Tax

Boone County council members plan a Saturday meeting to consider a local option tax for 1974, despite a previous veto for 1973 and indications Marion County will not back a 1974 tax. Missing from the vote is council president Lloyd Miller due to hospitalization with a broken hip. Highway appropriations also on the agenda.

Skyward Diarrhea Outbreak Aboard Caribbean Cruise Ship

The Skyward carries 1,000 passengers and crew as a diarrheal epidemic sweeps the ship. Coast Guard air-dropped 36 pounds of paregoric and a thirst quencher while two doctors aboard treat the ill. Authorities expect arrival in Miami around midnight with NCDC and Quarantine officials on hand. The cause is suspected to be a contagious intestinal virus and no evacuations are planned.

New Red Cross Executive Secretary Is Named Boone County

The Boone County Chapter of the American Red Cross announces the appointment of Mrs. Ira Patsy Scott Jr. of Jamestown as the new executive secretary succeeding Mrs. Max Chambers who resigns after twelve years. Mrs. Scott will assume the post July 1 and attend training at National Headquarters. Don F. Morton, chairman, praised the appointment.
