Supreme Court rules death penalty unconstitutional

The Supreme Court ruled the death penalty cruel and unusual punishment, sparing 600 inmates. In a 5 to 4 decision, Nixon appointees dissented while Justices Douglas Brennan Stewart White and Marshall wrote opinions supporting the ruling.

Foreign Doctor OK At Fayette Criticized By Hospital Staff

A group of 13 of 15 Fayette-Franklin Medical Society members protested the hospital board's decision to grant privileges to Dr. Chao Z. Huang, a foreign trained physician with a restricted Indiana license. Huang had faced opposition over allegedly forged references, but the trustees granted him access to use hospital facilities amid a broader debate on licensing and preceptor waivers in Indiana.

Indiana nine on death row saved by new US ruling

Nine men in Indiana still under death sentence are spared due to a Supreme Court decision striking down the death penalty. The list includes Michael Turczi with a Sept 27 date and eight others from 1957 to 1969. most remain under indefinite stays or new trials. Ralph Williams and Charles Frith, both sentenced this year, have March 28, 1973 execution dates.

Gunman robs Indianapolis savings and loan office

A bandit robbed the Union Federal Savings and Loan Association on 38th Street in Indianapolis and fled with about 11 400 in cash. Police described the suspect as a 31 year old Black man, 5 feet 2 inches tall, wearing a black shirt and brown pants.

Lebanon Community School Board plans a noon meeting to organize officers for the coming year. H Gene Etter of Whitestown is expected as board president with Mrs Ralph Martin as vice president. George Larr and Wendell Iddings join the board, replacing others. Sam Herr becomes Perry Two representative. The agenda includes salaries, retainer fees for Parr Richey Obremskey Pedersen Morton, and Lenox the school physician. Contracts for gas fuel and bread will be opened.
