A severe storm system lashed Indiana with funnel clouds and high winds causing structural damage and power outages. Halton A. Rush, 55, of Williamsport was killed by lightning while operating a farm tractor east of Williamsport.
The Boone County 4H Junior Contest drew 113 participants with awards across Foods Clothing and divisions I II III and above. Top honors in Foods were won by Lara Hohenberger and Deborah Born with many blue red and white ribbons awarded to a long list of 4H members including Susan Curtis Judy Schocke Kathy Peabody Dianna McIntyre and more.
A Carver Chair Company driver from Athens Tennessee died after apparently falling asleep and colliding with two state highway trucks on Interstate 52 near Colfax Road. Charles Ray Burriss, 20, was pronounced dead by Clinton County Coroner Allen Shurr. The crash, investigated by state police and wrecker crews from Lebanon, left the truck total loss and injured three other drivers who were treated at Culver Hospital Crawfordsville. The incident occurred shortly after 10 a.m.
Lebanon City School Board faces parents over plans to bus first graders from Lindbergh to Perry Central next fall to save hiring two teachers. Superintendent Joseph Foust says youngsters lack ties to the new building and opposition is expected. The meeting also seeks early drawings for a high school gym auditorium swimming pool and other improvements.
A seven year old Boone County boy was rushed to Witham Memorial Hospital after falling from a slide at Memorial Park around 10 30 a m. Rodney Wright son of Mr and Mrs Francis Wright of Jamestown complained of stomach pains but was not thought seriously injured. Bystanders said he lost footing while climbing the slide steps.
Five members of the Gary family died in a two car crash late Monday and early today raising Indiana's 1965 highway death toll to at least 662. George Jones Jr. and Hattie Mae Jones were killed in the front car while three children died in hospitals. The teens in the second car were injured as were two other children in Gary. Police could not determine which car crossed the center line. A separate motorcycle crash near Greensburg claimed Marion Sayre's life after a stunt ride with friends.
Ex Mississippi governor James P Coleman was hospitalized for kidney colic delaying Senate hearings on his nomination to a key federal appeals court in the South. Senator John C Stennis announced the illness as the judiciary subcommittee prepared to begin the hearings. Chairman James Eastland postponed the hearings indefinitely.

A 5 p.m. bolt of lightning struck a 35 by 40 foot barn on the Boone Clinton County line as 1.5 inches of rain fell in Lebanon in 40 minutes. The Timmons family escaped to an underground cave as fire destroyed the barn, granary, chicken house, and a Chevrolet pickup. Fire crews from Thorntown and Colfax fought the blaze. other calls included a total loss barn in Jackson Township and steam from a courthouse dome mistaken for smoke. Flooding followed heavy rain and a brief power outage with a frozen deep freezer at a Lebanon home shorted. This was Lebanon’s first heavy rain since June 10.
Boone County reports the first harvest of wheat described as below average. Revell brothers on Don Stewart farms gathered the initial crop with moisture around 12.5 percent and bushel weight about 60 pounds. Yield estimated at 45 bushels per acre, below last year, as rains threatened and humidity rose.
Mayor Herb Ransdell appointed Noble Rose as assistant fire chief to lead one of three Lebanon Fire Department shifts, with Kenny Evans as fire chief and Robert Laflin as assistant chief. The reshuffle aims to meet the 56 hour work law without extra hires as four men per shift work a 24 hour day followed by two days.
Four U.S. Marines were killed and four wounded in a clash with Viet Cong southeast of the Chu Lai Air Base in South Viet Nam. The old combat line was drawn as U.S. forces engaged the enemy for the first time in the area, marking a significant escalation in the Chu Lai zone.
