Los Angeles residents rally as hundreds cordon major highways in a manhunt for the so called mad murderer of three little girls. Officers close in on a suspect amid a tense crowd while townsfolk demand swift justice.
Mrs Belva Dickson 40 shot and killed her seven year old son Donald and seriously wounded another son before shooting herself. A second boy died later in Providence hospital. Sister in law Gladys Johnson from Chicago was visiting, husband Homer Dig stated illness drove his wife to temporary insanity.
Washington reports the House approved Senate amendments to a 1.6 billion relief bill, moving it to the White House. The Public Works Administration funds would extend to mid 1930s with rider provisions. Provisions earmark 711 million for school safety projects and 82 million for locally approved humanities projects.
Danville area reports a serious accident when Lucille Martin, 22, jumped from a car driven by Rev Howeh McGlasson of Danville Methodist Church near Lebanon. She suffered a broken nose and facial injuries after leaning from an auto traveling about a high speed and being frightened by a passing bus. Miss Martin, a resident of McGlassin’s home, recently left Central Normal College.
Alva Demaree, an Indianapolis truck driver, was fined 19 plus costs totaling 260 and jailed 30 days in Boone County for operating a vehicle under the influence. Mayor Carl Dale ordered license plates and auto registration suspended for one year. The new law prescribes a misdemeanor with fines from 10 to 50 dollars and possible imprisonment for at least ten days for first offenders. Prosecutor Richard W. Adney handled the state case.
Carey and Alexander present a lively Hit Parade at the Lido theatre on Sunday and Monday July 6 with top radio favorites and rising stars. Max Terhune, a Boone county native, shines alongside Frank Carey Newell Holloman and Lebanon performers in a lively musical revue praised by local audiences.
Owen DP Young of New York, chair of General Electro, urged broadening American industry beyond mere production expansion. He argued policy should shift to meet postwar demand while avoiding inflation and preserving consumers’ purchasing power, noting lessons from reallocating surplus to those in need. Sydney reports Amfia Faris completing another leg of her round the world equatorial flight. She landed at Lae, New Guinea at 3 p.m. local time after departing Port Darwin. She plans onward legs to California via Howland Island and Hawaii.
The Americans held a 21 to 2 lead in the Ryder Gap play as the British were edged in the afternoon match. Johany Revolt and Henry Peard endured a 2 and 1 defeat, with Percy Allis and Richard Burton winning their match 2 and 1 after a late surge from 8 down in the morning round. Other foursomes results included Dudley and Nelson over Padgham and Cotton, and Gene Saragen with Denny Shute.
Moscow reports Russia will open a permanent air link across the North Pole to the United States once American polar bases are ready. Professor Otto Schmidt notes the arctic plan and announced it tonight in Moscow.
Washington, June 29. Senator Burton K. Wheeler of Montana denounces administration plans and calls for a constitutional amendment to alter the Supreme Court. He refuses any compromise and argues the court is for the people, not one administration, urging passage of a permanent change or defeat the proposal.
New York June 29 three indictments for first degree murder were returned against Robert Irwin the confessed triple slayer by the New York County Grand Jury. He was brought to General Sessions and will enter his plea. The district attorney planned to push for the electric chair. Continued on Page 6
Indianapolis officials say the fate of Gov. Townsend's steel strike truce hinges on CIO leader John L. Lewis. Indiana labor chief Hutson and Secretary Perkins plan talks in Washington to push a return to work while the National Labor Relations Board reviews the case. The unions refuse the proposed terms, chiefly over CIO recognition as the sole bargaining agent, a point central to the dispute.
In Amsterdam New York, Serviss, 45, is held for the murder of two aunts, Mary Finners and Jennie Enders, whose bodies were found in their apartment after screams were heard. Police say Serviss was captured when bloodied clothing surfaced and two men encountered him at the door. the sisters suffered fatal head wounds and another relative, Nell Enders, was hospitalized.
Wheat futures extended gains in Chicago with prices near 34c higher as traders priced in reports of rust damage in the United States and poor rains in Canada. Sept and Dec contracts climbed to about 1.22 1 4 and 1.25 dollars respectively, the latter a season high, with oats and rye also advancing.
James J. Braddock ex heavy champion drew unprecedented demand. Manager Joe Gould said Braddock has more offers to fight and to referee bouts than during his heavyweight era. A $35,000 bid to face John Henry Lewis in Pittsburgh in September was reported, with two offers to fight Max Baer from England and Tom Gallery in Los Angeles. Gould also noted Braddock earned over $100,000 from his loss to Joe Louis.
Lebanon merchants announce a one day Good Will Day offering a wide array of items at no profit. The event by 28 Chamber of Commerce members aims to boost customer goodwill with high quality merchandise sold for very low prices. Shoppers are urged to browse the misprinted list and compare ads in the issue to plan purchases.
Finance Minister George Bonnet unveiled a program to defend the franc and curb speculation as the French Cabinet unanimously approved his plan. The Elysee meeting followed a two hour session after a flurry of conferences that halted payments and closed markets. Bonnet, back from Washington, showed resolve while cabinet members also backed Premier Camille Chautemps general program.
Dinamit blasts cripple the Bethlehem Steel Cambrian works in Johnstown Pa threatening a two week shutdown. Water mains feeding the Cambrian plant were destroyed prompting state police to guard reservoirs including the Quemahoning dam. Officials reported reduced workforce amid CIO strike and fears of strikebreakers, with investigations continuing.
