A farmer in Peru Indiana found a jacket believed to belong to a hijacker who bailed from an American Airlines 727 with half a million dollars in ransom. The money and the hijacker's gun were found nearby and police say the suspect is probably dead.
A Sunman motorist loses control on I 65 near Lebanon causing a northbound truck to overturn on impact. The driver Marvin W. Cocheran 47 treated for head injuries and lacerations. The other driver Robert D. Mattox 35 from Frankfort sustained minor injuries and was held overnight. Deputy Tom Griffiths led the investigation. Meanwhile President Nixon announced 10000 more Vietnam withdrawals to 39000 by Sept 1 and immediate end to voluntary draftees with further reductions planned.
Boone Superior Court Judge Paul Johnson Jr rules against the Boone Board of Zoning Appeals which had vetoed a Jelly Stone Camper Park in Washington Township along Sugar Creek. The KOA like site owned by Nicholas F. Bratovich and Jacob B. Darling will include a club room and pool with planned flood warnings, dikes, and stream control to reduce risk. The Planning Board had approved the project, while the zoning board cited flood safety concerns.

The July Fourth celebration in Lebanon features a 2 p.m. parade starting at Lebanon High School with a reviewing stand on Fordice and East Streets. Participants include multiple school bands and a large mix of walking units motorized entries floats cars and misc elements such as the July Fourth Queen and a donkey cart procession.
Louis Ray Sorter, 24, of Plainfield, appeared in Boone County Superior Court for a February 17, 1971 safe cracking at Zionsville School. Arrested June 16, 1972, on safe burglary charges, he was in Alaska since the burglary. The safe was broken with an axe and hammer, $1112.95 taken, bond set at $5000, case continued for arraignment. He has no attorney and seeks time to contact family and obtain counsel.
About 1,200 workers of United Ker Workers Local 133 at the Firestone Industrial Products plant began an unauthorized stoppage late Tuesday night over pay for break time. Pickets formed and print production halted while administrative staff crossed lines. Local president I H Yeary spoke with striking members as plant management issued no comment.
