Paul E. Nagel was installed as president of the Rotary Club at a Friday noon luncheon at Alen Country Club. Officers include Carroll Thompson as VP, Thomas Christian as secretary, Robert McFrye as treasurer, with Richard Chambers and Robert Nelson as sergeants at arms. Directors are Nagel, McFrye, Thompson, Herman Antle, James Mason, John Darnall, and Paul R. Honan.
Early today burglars broke into Larr Equipment Co in Lebanon and the Paul Harris store at Northfield Shopping Center. Loot included more than 200 in cash and about 900 in checks at Larr while Harris saw clothing items stolen after entry via a roof hole. Police investigate second major break-in at the Larr firm within a year. A separate burglary at the Helen Barker residence occurred during vacation with a TV, radio, clock, frozen foods and cash missing.
Cambodian forces withdrew from Labensiek and Bo Keo in Rattanakiri Province under repeated Viet Cong and North Vietnamese attacks, surrendering large areas of northeastern Cambodia. In South Vietnam, eight Americans died and 35 wounded in three clashes, with 18 killed and 61 wounded over two days. The 101st Airborne and Marines reported multiple fatalities in separate engagements near Hue and Da Nang.
Mrs Ronnie Boone was crowned the 11th Mrs Boone to reign over Lebanon's July 4th Festival pageant. The event drew 600 plus attendees, with Queen sponsor Rainbow For Girls and Royal Court finalists Mrs James Buchanan Mrs Marvin Lasley and others. Finalists included Mrs Richard Parsons and Mrs Steven Peabody. Emcee Johnnie Coons led acts by Harmony Hustlers Thorntown Swing Choir Guacamole Brass Band and Cal Yoke. Judges from Indianapolis and Lebanon praised the turnout as the festival continues with planned events replacing a coronation ball.
More than 125 youths secured summer employment in Lebanon across merchants and industries. The listing highlights organizations from Valerine's to Turtle shops and public facilities, naming students and supervisors such as Ann Hutchinson, John Boatright, Greg Robinson, and Lisa Whit latch among others, reflecting a broad local effort to provide work experience despite economic challenges.
Mrs Audra F Batchelor 76 native of Boone County and retired teacher died Friday at home in Indianapolis after a year in residence. Matthew E Lofquist 89 died Friday at home. Milem D Clance 76 Jamestown area farmer died Friday at Carmen Nursing Home Crawfords ville. Lebanon School Superintendent Gordon V. Ruff announced a 30000 grant under Title II of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act for Perry Worth Elementary. The READS program aims to raise reading through differentiated staffing, with a reading staff team and new instructional materials. Public visits to Perry Worth are welcome during the upcoming school year.
