SAN FRANCISCO Negro leaders outlined a multi pronged strategy to challenge segregation through lawsuits federal legislation and executive action. Thurgood Marshall NAACP attorney urged Congress and the administration to act against state governments surrendering to segregation. The plan includes legal suits in eight states education and boycott threats, with recommendations to the six day convention.
Center township chairmen Frank Hiland and Kenneth Ric frond lead the drive raising 155000 with a list of co chairmen including Paul Merton John Gibbs Floyd McDonald and others across Center Union Eagle Worth and Sun Creek townships. Washington reports congressional sponsors believe the 3 1/2 billion highway bill may have motorists riding on new superhighways by summer 1958. Lebanon Chamber of Commerce president Stanley Halltoed announced a committee to raise funds for a Fourth of July celebration including a parade and free fireworks at Memorial Park next Wednesday. Committee members cover areas around Square and Main streets with assignments for solicitors and civic groups and industry liaison.
A three-vehicle collision on the 600 block of North Lehsnen Street caused about 450 dollars in damage and resulted in one driver’s arrest. Keith Conn inghaey drove a truck headed north and stopped for a cat, Jehr Philippe’s car was rear‑ended, and Jerry Allen Wells received a traffic ticket for loss of vehicle control. Wells faces Justice of the Peace court later.
Thorntown Lions pledged funds and volunteers to support Sugar Creek Township Trustee Bill Gillan in a campaign drive at the Exposition Grounds. Eighteen Lions contributed 205 dollars and ten Lions added more, with a $55 boost noted as part of the effort. Members aiding Gillan and co chair Herschel Altum include Harold Evans Richard Woody Alvin Lovell Bob Gatewood and others.

Funeral services for Max L Kendall of Zianaville who died Monday night will be held at 2 30 pm Thursday at Flanner Buchanan Broad Ripple Mortuary in Indianapolis. Burial will be in Glen Cove Cemetery at Knights Ferry. The body will lie in state at Flanner Buchanan Phillippi Mortuary in Mgrile until Thursday morning when it will be taken to Indianapolis.
The FCC considered a long range plan to move most TV broadcasting from VHF to UHF channels 14 through 83. The move aims to equalize competition for UHF operators and allow survival against VHF rivals, with a transition lasting years and potentially requiring 10 years of transition for some stations.
Francis T. McCarty a Brimfield industrialist and farmer in Nobie County pulled out of the Republican nomination fight for governor citing personal reasons and a recent virus illness that hindered campaigning. He reported 270 pledged first ballots and had been endorsed by the 4th District.
Indianapolis dispatch reports Terre Haute mayor Ralph Tucker won the Democratic gubernatorial nomination on the ninth ballot at a bitter Indiana convention. He defeated Lt. Gov. candidate Bartel Zandstra and former favorite Matthew Welsh amid machine voting and late shifts. final tally followed long balloting and party leadership maneuvering.
The murder trial of former Marine corporal Doyle Skaggs of Frankfort Indiana entered its second day as the defense opened its case. Skaggs is accused of beating scalding and kicking his two stepsons to death after living in Lebanon prior to assignment at Parris Island. In Ohio, Mr and Mrs George Dauman of Rt 2 Hope were killed when their car collided with a semi trailer on US 31 near Columbus. Across the Atlantic tennis saw Vic Seixas and Art Larsen advance to the third round at Wimbledon while Polly Riley Mary Ann Downey Margaret Wiffs Smith and Mary Patton Janssen reached the British women’s amateur golf quarterfinals in Sunningdale. Pat Lesser was defeated 4 and 2 by Angela Ward. Also in Columbus Purdue’s Joe Campbell defeated Ernie George in the first round of the National Intercollegiate Championship.
J D Clifton of 1204 North Meridian Street was elected to the Indianapolis Zone Buick Dealers Council, a 10 man Grass roots unit chosen by Buick dealers District 1 to discuss retail auto business. Clifton serves on Lebanton Chamber of Commerce executive board and Indiana Saddle Horse Association executive committee, and belongs to Elks, Masonic Lodge, Shrine. He is a partner at Miller Auto Co located at 300 South Lebanon Street.
Jack L. Dee of Lebanon was elected president of the Boone County Shrine Club at the annual meeting with a dinner dance honoring Shriner wives. Over 106 members attended at Hot Patrol clubhouse near Indianapolis. Tony Lobriico succeeds as head. other officers include Jack Mossman first vice president Rabereh Padget second vice president Leon Williamson secretary and treasurer. Plans call for all day entertainment and a Fourth of July parade by the Murat Horse Patrol at the Boone County Conservation site.
A Boeing BUST tanker loaded with highly inflammable fuel crashed and exploded near Walker Air Force Base in southeastern New Mexico after takeoff at 4 50 pm. Eleven people were killed and several injured as the four engine aircraft burst into flames and disintegrated in an open field south of the base, with shock and confusion reported by tower workers.
A brief tornado scare in Crawfordsville prompted emergency alerts and a citywide warning. Police radio traffic reported high winds and downed wires before an all clear was issued. Eight or nine Hendricks County youths were invited as honored guests. Women bringing a cow dish and table service. The Marines will train at San Diego and join the all Indiana Congressional Medal of Honor group, leaving Friday from Indianapolis.
