Technical Sergeant Winfred Kincaid arrived home from England where since January he completed twenty five missions over enemy territory. His daughter Carolyn Kay, age twenty months, greeted him on his return to the States as the family enjoys his twelve day leave. Relatives and friends in the town and at Pianafort welcomed him back. Governor Earl Warren spokes at the Chicago Stadium convention urging a November Republican victory to restore Republican governance and international cooperation. He said the GOP means business and reflects the American will, contrasting with Democratic control in Washington.
Technical Sergeant Lloyd Kenneth Koons, radio operator, listed as killed in action over Germany. He had served since February 1943 and was overseas since March, the War Department telegram reported. He was 21 or 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Koons of Whitestown, with a brother Charles Koons also listed. His wife Mrs Vanda Mac Beatty Koe Whiteati was mentioned in the telegram.
Boone county farmers face widespread chinch bug damage as field surveys with Purdue entomologist Glen Lehker reveal infestations moving from wheat and rye into corn. Control methods include thoroughly dishing damaged corn and feeding it to soybeans, plus early variety Richland for harvest readiness. Working the soil to a good condition may kill bugs and halt spread. some farmers plan to leave an area fallow.
IOAN MA CLIFTON, RANGER, MISSING. A message to his father, Marion Clifton, from Washington says he has been missing since June. The letter, sent last week, lacks date or postmark but is presumed written before the invasion. Continued on Page Three.
In a hot day report the Penny Ice Fund shows a grand total of 62 donations totaling 63 dollars as a new high heat nears 95 degrees. The piece asks Lonignon residents to follow the example and send in or bring donations to the fund.
C A Potts vice president of U S Machine Corp was guest speaker at the joint meeting of the America and Canadian societies of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers at Puridge University. He owns farms in Boone and Montgomery counties and spoke on Selling Farm Movement Services. The convention opened Monday and runs to Wednesday.
June 27 report says Allied forces breach German resistance in central Italy. British American units push along a 23 mile front from Chiusi toward Perugia while American tanks and infantry drive six miles up the Tyrrhenian coast road to within 30 miles of Livorno. Churchill announced Allied casualties from the invasion since last September total 74,122 killed in action.
The day topped the present season with a 95 degree reading reported by Clyde D Laughner, Whiteatos official weather observer. By noon the record climbed to 94, previously set on June 17 and May ? The afternoon saw another high near 95 as observers logged the heat.
Allied forces, with tank support, seize eight villages and sever main transport lines southwest of Caen in a large offensive. The surge, part of the Norman campaign, begins a new phase and reportedly inflicts at least 70,000 Nazi casualties while restoring wrecked docks and advancing toward Cherbourg.
Allied forces pressed operations across Saipan and nearby Tinian and Rota as sea and land artillery bombarded airports and towns. Gen von Schlieben, commander at Cherbourg fortress, surrenders to American forces. He is photographed exiting an American jeep, questioned by an American general who asks about surrendering while his troops fight on. Von Schlieben says he believes small die-hard units can cause delays. He is invited to meet the headquarters.
The rationing office will be closed both Thursday and Friday to clear a backlog of certificates due to insufficient volunteer help. The office opens again Saturday morning. Volunteers are urgently needed. call 181 or visit the office to offer one or two hours daily.
