Local Marine Cpl Veach Killed in Vietnam Combat Near Quang Nam
L/Cpl Robert Veach, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Guy Veach of Lebanon, was killed by gunshot wounds in Vietnam near Quang Nam while serving as a machinegunner. The telegram from Gen. Leonard Chapman said his body would be shipped home within one to two weeks for services at Russell and Hitch Funeral Home with Marine guard. Veach had been in Vietnam since Sunday, enlisted last November, and hoped to return to take over the fencing business. His death pushes Indiana’s toll in the Vietnam War past 25,000 for six years of conflict. His father blamed the government for a political war and vowed his other sons would not be drafted.

Indiana State Police report Trooper Richard Downs was injured while a farm truck and a semi passed a stopped vehicle along State Road 39 near Mechanicsburg he was treated at Clinton County Hospital and released. Trooper Francis Shrock aided at the scene and no charges were filed.
