Funeral services for Bion Williams 63 of the New Ross area were held Monday at Hunt and Son funeral home in Crawfordsville with Rev Forrest Graves of New Ross officiating. Survivors include brothers Oscar Williams and Otis Williams of Jamestown. Williams, a lifelong farmer, died Friday at his home from a heart attack near New Ross.
Max L Kendall 49 assistant manager of Swiggett Lumber in Zionsville died unexpectedly at home. Cause listed as coronary thrombosis. Born Guilford North Carolina son of M L and ly Kendall. Survived by wife Alberta born 1900s two children Richard and Sylvia and four brothers and three sisters. Funeral plans pending relatives in North Carolina. Friends may call after 7 p m at Flauner Buchanan funeral home in Zionsville.
Washington leaders in the pensions for veterans drive unveiled a half-cost proposal as the House heads into a heated clash over a bill with potential billions in annual costs. Rep Edmondson and veterans groups back a 90 dollar monthly pension rather than 105. The plan, plus cuts in the committee bill, would cut first-year costs to just over two thirds of a billion dollars, avoiding the administration's 148 billion total by 2000. Teague with Rayburn backing a rival liberalization plan would cost about 200 million in the first year. Republicans caucused to let members vote freely while some Democrats joked about the bill. The Lebanon Mission Lutherans officially organized as Trinity Lutheran Church of the Indiana Synod United Lutheran Church in America. Presiding officer W M Wick declared the congregation, which began with 17 transfers and 57 charter members to follow, as a new church with a seven-man one-woman council. The day featured remarks by Rev Wick and Dr F M Hanes, plus choir performances and two baptisms and a May 20 confirmation. Chartered members listed include H F Baumert, Alice Bender, Emil Brandt, James Brooks, Richard Cook, Heinz Elserman, L A Estela, Ida Flodell, Ada Gleb, Forest Gleb, Fred Haas, and Walter Hansen Jr. Continued on Page 4.
Indiana Democrats at the state convention adopted a 1956 platform urging government openness, 100 percent parity for farmers, a guaranteed annual wage, labor protections, and civil rights measures. The platform criticizes the current administration, calls for tax and elections reforms, veteran bonuses, school funding aid, and automatic census-based reapportionment, while opposing right to work and Taft Hartley provisions.
Indiana plan widens three Boone County bridges as part of a 31-bridge program in the west central region. Work under Frankfort sub district will occur on routes 32 east of Lebanon, 32 east of its junction with 421, and 47 east of Thorntown using precast concrete slabs to widen hand rail structures up to eight feet.
A two-vehicle crash at the State Road 32 and US 52 intersection west of Lebanon injured Ralph Amos, 50, who was treated and released, while Theodore HL Sturenberg, 31, of Albert Lea, Minnesota, was arrested for crossing the center and fined. The pickup was a total loss and the semi sustained minor damage. Sheriff Wilbur Slagle reported Amos’s westbound truck was struck broadside by the southbound semi driven by Sturenberg.

The Lebanon Junior Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual Awards Night and officer installation at the Rose Haven Diner on US 52 northwest of Colfax Friday at 7 pm. Twenty four Jaycees will receive the Sperk Plug awards and the Key Award goes to one outstanding member.
Washington reports the House approved a sweeping highway program worth 33 billion dollars, aiming to fund a 13 year national road plan. A companion 14.8 billion tax bill would finance the effort, and the measure now moves to the Senate for approval after a brief conference.

The American Legion and Auxiliary sponsor a public pitch-in dinner at 7 pm Wednesday at the Legion Home to honor three new enlistees from Boone and Hamilton counties in the Indiana Medal of Honor Marine company. Capt Archie Van Winkle of the Indianapolis recruiting office will speak. Parents will be honored. the enlistees depart Friday for San Diego to begin boot camp.
