Hayward Wisconsin June 2 a posse of about 500 heavily armed men conducts a final sweep in a six mile wooded and swampy strip east of Hayward as Sheriff George Schuetter presses the hunt for Olson the sharpshooting suspect accused in the kidnap murder of a year old boy and the killing of two deputies amid a broader manhunt that began after an auto theft arrest attempt.
President Roosevelt spends a quiet day at his Hyde Park boyhood home on the Hudson River. Acting White House Secretary Hassett says there are no official readers and the appointment list is held open on the chief executive’s orders.
The boy James Richard Wilkinson seven of Indianapolis family Lawrence Elwood Wilkinson and 201 West Michigan street vanished while swimming near a hole in Sugar Creek at the Bennington farm northwest of Lebanon. Despite rescue attempts by brothers and local firemen aided by Frankfort responders the muddy water hindered retrieval. A crowd gathered as rescuers used hooks and barbed wire to reach the submerged child. The incident is continued on page 6.
Lebanon awarded the 1939 Indiana championship tournament by Ray Dumont of the National Semi-Pro Baseball Congress. The event, staged at Memorial Park, begins Sunday July 23 as an elimination meet to select the Hoosier entry for Wichita August 11 to 23. Lebanon Park Board sponsors with Paul Schenck as state commissioner and Harold Buchanan assisting. Max Stalin named tournament secretary. The Kinyan Reliables of Indianapolis defend their state title as three Indianapolis teams are expected to enter. Schedule starts with two games daily, culminating in a three-game slate the following Saturday to crown the state champion.

Portsmouth Ohio June 26 Frank Case 46 a farm hand captured in a field at Wheelersburg admitted to police that he shot and killed two people at Hillsboro The bodies were found on the Hillsboro farm Mrs Jane Richmond 45 was shot five times and Danny Setty 73 the father in law was killed Case fled in a truck to Sinkin Springs and was later captured after abandoning the getaway vehicle Authorities said he regretted killing Mrs Richmond but was not remorseful over Setty saying the elder man had threatened him

Washington June 26 Roosevelt suffered a major defeat as the Senate 47 to 31 denied him power to further devalue the dollar. Senator Carter Glass led conservative Democrats in opposing the emergency devaluation authority, with 29 Democrats, 17 Republicans and a Farmer-Laborite voting against the president.
San Francisco June 26 Paul V. McNutt United States High Commissioner to the Philippines was to entrain tonight for Indiana where his home state political party has a reported $2000 campaign fund to further Democratic presidential aspirations.
Shanghai reports that missionaries Rev. A. A. Caswell and his wife were killed in a Japanese air raid on Changte. An official report said the attackers bombed the mission deliberately and systematically. The raid occurred on Saturday.
Washington reports that the judiciary committee favorably reported to the Senate a resolution to place the Townsend old age pension plan before voters. Sponsored by Lodge of Massachusetts and Pepper of Florida, the measure calls for a constitutional amendment embodying Townsend principles. In Cincinnati a woman bookkeeper was robbed at Beverly Hills Country Club as two men stole between 9000 and 11000 from the steel money cabinet and fled in an automobile.
