Roosevelt proposes a National Youth Administration to aid unem ployed youths aged 16 to 25, with an initial $59 million budget. The plan foresees 159000 trainees, 150000 in relief work, 100000 finishing high school, and 120000 receiving college or postgrad study, with state chapters and employer apprenticeships.
Meridian Mississippi June 26 the Keys brothers Al and Fred flew their plane Ole Miss for over two days amid wind rain and gear troubles aiming to set a new endurance record. With 52 hours aloft they trailed the official mark by 30 hours 41 minutes 30 seconds and faced a deflating tire hazard on approach.
Crawfordsville Ind June 26 Mrs Ida B Evans seventy two died in Culver hospital from injuries after a collision five miles east of town last Tuesday. She was riding with her daughter Mrs Lizzie Hymer when their car hit an oil truck driven by Ison Sink. Mrs Hymer and her daughter Miss Marsceln Hymer were not injured. They live near New Ross.
Chicago, June 26. Attorney Louis Piquett a former city prosecutor and associate of John Dillinger was convicted by a federal court jury of harboring Homer Van Meter a Dillinger henchman. He faces up to two years in prison and a 10000 dollar fine or both, and announced he would contest the verdict.
Washington reports Congress and the President approved a total national defense outlay of 870,682,040 dollars for the next fiscal year. The Navy bill authorizes 24 new warships and 555 naval aircraft while boosting active fleet personnel to 3,500. the Army bill adds 46,000 regular soldiers and 5,000 National Guard, though MacArthur says funding shortfall remains.
In Elkhart Indiana on June 26 three brothers aged 15 13 and 8 were killed by a discarded explosive found at a junk yard. Sister Erma heard the blast and found the mangled bodies. Authorities seek who brought the device to the dump.
Mrs Emmerst Thompson received a telegram this morning announcing the death of Mrs Emery H Burrigs sister in law of a Lebanon resident. Mrs Burris passed away in a Great Bend hospital Tuesday night. The husband and three children, two sons and a daughter, arrived. Burris is a former Lebanon resident and Mrs Burris had visited here.
Burglars knocked the combination from a safe at the Old Time Religion tabernacle in Fort Wayne Indiana and escaped with 107 dollars. Rev Howard Paschal issued an appeal for the thieves to keep the collection but return insurance papers taken.
Indiana Governor McNutt announced delivery soon of a new cabin airplane for state and business trips. The Adjutant General’s department owns it, costing 8640 dollars. Pilot will be Lt Edward Masehmey, National Guard. Elmer Strand says it will save thousands annually. Top speed 140 miles per hour. four passengers capacity.
Gerald Thompson confessed killer of Mildred Hallmark faced arraignment in Circuit Court Judge Ingram fixed July 22 as trial start. Ben Thurman appointed to defend Thompson. the 25 year old machinist gave no plea but expressed willingness for trial. Thompson cried for mercy when the July date was chosen.
At El Paw Texas on June 26 a blast at the South Western Portland plant buried four men under a heavy rock load after 20 000 pounds of dynamite exploded prematurely. Three others were critically injured. One victim, John Sparks 26 son of the plant superintendent, was among those buried. Bloodhounds and a steam shovel aided the search but no hope remained for survivors. Injured include Juan Fierro Juan Salcedo and Guadalupe Demos with Demos believed dying.
Bill Sefton, USC pole vaulter, tied for honors at 14 feet 1 1/8 inches in the 1935 national collegiate A A. meet at Berkeley. He is the son of Rush Sefton, a former Lebanon resident. The Sefton family lived here years ago. grandfather Bert Sefton ran a local haberdashery and later worked in the Scott department store clothing department before moving to Arkansas then California.
Washington June 26 sponsors of bonus legislation pressed for a cash payment of adjusted service certificates. The special steering committee handling the bill chaired by Rev. Pinal Texas announced it would seek to finance the measure through the President's tax program.
Two youths burrowed into a locomotive coal tender were captured in Indianapolis at requests from Cleveland authorities. They identified as Karl King 17 and Edward Link of Cleveland. Arrests followed reports that two convicts had ridden a Hig Four railroad freight train from Cleveland.
Philadelphia June 26 five firemen were overcome by smoke as flames destroyed a five story Philco Radio Manufacturing plant. Damage tops $500000. About 500 workers will be temporarily without work. The blaze was preceded by ten explosions of unknown origin, shattering windows across several buildings on the site.
Monroe Castetter, a prominent Washington township farmer and advisory board member missing since June, was found exhausted but alive late Tuesday near Thorntown. He had escaped into Sugar Creek, then was rescued by locals and returned to his home as family fears of kidnapping and a nervous breakdown fade with his recovery.
Washington reports 50,000 additional men were added to the CCC in the first week of the expansion enrollment program begun June 15. Enrolment rose to 446,000 with a potential maximum of 600,000. State figures include Indiana with 417 enrolled.

Mrs. Mont B. Fisher of Frankfort, 64, died at Witham hospital after a honey bee sting triggered a fall from an open car door driven by her son Ted. The accident occurred two miles north of Lebanon when a bee alighted on the driver’s hand, the door swung open, and the car veered off the road. Despite initially regaining consciousness, Fisher slipped into a coma and died from cerebral hemorrhage and complications of injuries. Survivors include Ted Fisher, Helen Fisher, and Miss Marjorie Jovlan.
Reports from Hsinking Manchukuo describe a “drastic” battle near the Chakar ehol border as 80 Japanese land forces engage Chinese troops under General Wu Sung Sheng. Chinese forces allied with Germany, led by Sung Cheh Yuan, face an ultimatum from Japan demanding capitulation within three days as Nanking faces pressure from Ken Dothara’s high command.
In Massachusetts the jury foreman Charles F Cooper, 47, was found dead in bed at his home after a sealed verdict was brought into court. The verdict read in court awarded $4,900 to the plaintiff in an automobile accident suit. Cooper had served on the jury for seven years.
