Lebanon Library Receives Founder Abner Longley Portrait
Postmaster Paul M. McGinley donated three Lebanon historic items to the Carnegie Public Library: a photo of Abner H. Longley Lebanon’s first settler and postmaster, his postmaster commission certificate dated January 18, 1833, and the original wrapper for the commission. Longley, born 1796 in Kentucky, moved from Ohio to Lebanon in 1832 and served as postmaster, preacher, surveyor and legislator. He officiated Lebanon’s first burial, was town clerk, and later died May 9, 1879 in Paola Kansas. The relics, once given to former postmaster Brian W. Smith, are now displayed for public viewing.

Arson suspected after deadly New Orleans fire in French Quarter
A flash fire swept a small upstairs bar in New Orleans French Quarter Sunday night killing 29 people. Authorities say there is some evidence of arson. Fifteen escaped by leaping from a second story window, with six seriously hurt. Fire officials say the blaze moved rapidly, starting on one side of the second floor lounge. exits and a bathroom were on the other side. Witnesses describe screams and people jumping to safety as rescuers worked.
