Lebanon’s July 4 celebration opens Friday with a coronation pageant at Lebanon High School at 7 0 p m crowning the new Mrs Boone County. About 12 county women compete after day long judging with emcee Johnnie Coons plus guests Nate Hay and others.
Boone County Family YMCA offers a two session day camp for four and five year olds at the Conservation Club grounds July 6 10 and July 13 17. Activities include nature hikes crafts songs and games with a daily schedule from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Call 482 0481 for more information and availability.
The Boone County Grand Jury for July to September and the Boone Circuit Court regular petit juries were named. Grand jurors include Jack Alexander Ellsworth R Head Robert Cassell Center Township Charles Acton Sugar Creek Harry Bennett Frank Miller Eagle Two Gerald Hole Jackson Two and Edmund C Shilling Washington Two. First of 12 petit jurors for Circuit Court are Judy A Adair Center Grafton Henry Jackson Marjorie Hawkins Center William J Adams Sugar Creek Orval M Mann Union Margaret Elliott Eagle Eugene Watson Center Betty Jo Lough Sugar Creek Larry Zickmund Marion Carl Pittman Jackson and James R Summonville Dorothy H Alkire Center. Calendar lists events from June 26 to July 4 including coronation pageant Battle of the Bands and vespers at Memorial Park. Activities feature Little Miss Boone County contest bicycle parade table tennis tournament tennis finals pet parade bazaar and various barbecues coin show and fireworks at Memorial Park with times and venues.
A Wednesday evening storm swept Lebanon, Thorntown, and surrounding towns with high winds and hail. Power outages affected about 600 to 700 Lebanon homes and 25+ Thorntown customers, with REMC crews working until 2:15 a.m. Multiple trees fell, belts of rain hit Dover, and minor injuries were reported at a residence on Lafayette Avenue. Zionsville Whitestown Advance Jamestown reported no damage.
In Lebanon two suits allege Mrs. Eunice Hopkins allowed the Hopkins Market building to become a nuisance after bricks toppled from a second story. Ed Truitt seeks 760 for a total loss canopy while Ed Young seeks 10000 for business loss, canopy, plate glass, and air conditioner damage. Cases filed in Boone Superior Court.
A Wednesday thunderstorm struck Thorntown area with two lightning hits. The Stump residence in Northfield suffered fire damage after a bolt entered via a TV antenna, while the Orville Carter farm barn near Thorn Town burned to the ground. Power lines were knocked out in Lebanon and Thorntown, with REMC outages countywide and 3.1 inches of rain in Dover.
Boone County health officials report a sharp rise in rat activity around Slaughterhouse Road and SR 39 north of Lebanon. Sanitarian James Ash notes many rats, urges residents to remove food sources and trash, and considers targeted poisoning sprays after assessing the outbreak's severity.

A 25 year old Pensacola man, Michael Collins, faces Boone County charges of taking his son in violation of a court order on May 11. Collins, jailed on a 5000 dollar bond, was arrested in Worthington Indiana last week. Prosecutor James P. Buchanan filed the charges after a divorce affidavit by Vicki Collins. Lebanon attorney Tom Pedersen was appointed to represent Collins who said he could not pay for counsel.
